Personality
Julia can be described as a bit timid and shy, but only around those she does not know well. Upon the tragedy that took place at her district, she was always afraid, and even more afraid to open up to others. However, this all changes when she meets Cher Rosenberg, a kind girl from the Mitras district. During her trainee days, making friends was not a specialty of hers, and everyone viewed her as "the quiet mysterious girl. This opinion of her changes after she befriends Sasha Braus and Krista Lenz, two new best friends, who, along with Cher and her older brother Hugo breaks her out of her shell and soon, she is able to make new friends and open up more. Upon being who she really is and getting used to everyone, she is shown to also be a bit rebellious, mischievous, pulling pranks with Hugo and Cher and a little tomboyish. She is evaluated by Instructor Shadis' as "a calm, laidback girl, that is very quiet, and physically weak, but possesses a frightening and strong inner will, and amazing observational abilities, as well as a good level of intelligence which will come in handy at battle, a promising trainee". She is also noted, by Eren, to be a extremely down to earth and cheery at times, a realist, but a bit of a pessimist at times.

Background
Before the fall of Wall Maria, Julia lived in total peace and tranquility, with her mother, a housewife and father, a famous painter in the Shinganshina district. Although she was a quiet child that loved to read books, paint, and observe the people, she still felt a bit lonely, which is how she got into pranking. Her objective wasn't to scare anyone, but to mainly put a smile on their face, something not a lot of people got. One day, she pranked Armin by scaring him. Noticing how upset he was, she apologized to him and gave him a picture she drew, never seeing him again until her trainee days. Then, in 845, Wall Maria and Shinganshina was attacked. About to be eaten by a titan, a Garrison saved her life, and rushed her to the boat. Sadly, she never found her parents on the boat, and never saw them again, the only thing left of them she had being her locket with a family photo of them her father had painted. Her parent's status's are unknown.
Soon after, she, along with many other people, had to live in poor shelters, which she hated, and there, she felt more alone than ever. One day, a family, the Rosenbergs, had came to the shelter to donate some food, blankets and clothing. There, she mistakenly bumped into a young girl named Cher Rosenberg, and was quickly befriended by her. After telling her what had happened at Wall Maria, her hometown, Cher was devastated. She didn't want to leave her new friend alone in a poor shelter where she was uncertain of what would happen to her, so she asked her parents if she could stay with them. Her parents however, were very understanding of her situation and had her move in with them. They also wanted her to think of them as her own family.
For the next 3 years, the two girls would become as close as sisters. One day, Julia saw an advertisement poster posted up on one of the walls, about recruiting all able teens into a training program for the survey corps, the garrison and the military police. Remembering what the titans had done to Wall Maria and how they tore her family apart, she took the poster home and showed Cher and Hugo. That night at dinner, Julia, along with Cher and Hugo revealed their plans of joining the trainees squad. At first, the family isn't too pleased with their decisions, they let them go ahead, making Cher promise to only join the garrison, thinking it would be safer for her, as well as letting both Julia and Hugo join the survey corps, but making Hugo promise to protect both Cher and Julia as well,since he is the only boy and that part of his duties were to protect her sisters. A week after, she, Cher and Hugo left for the trainees squad.
After getting settled into the trainees squad, it was a rocky start for Julia. It was as if Cher and Hugo found their friends and places in the squad, but she had not made any yet. Cher and Hugo, noticing her lack of social interaction, attempted to break her out of it. When all seemed to fail, two girls, Sasha Braus and Krista Lenz, noticing how withdrawn she was, attempted to befriend her which worked. Soon after, she grew out of her shell,and befriended more people, some of them being Eren, Jean (much to Hugo's dismay), Connie, Marco, Armin, Reiner, and Mikasa well as a few others. However, she also had her share of enemies, as they viewed her as sly and deceitful. Some of the girls there were jealous of her as well, as being mixed was a rare sight to them, which made her stand out among some of the guys, one of them being Armin.
