He was a Jedi once, but even then, Maraz was more than a little melancholy, and involved in frequent battles with his inner demons. He barely ever smiled, and believed that the Light would win primarily because he dearly wanted to, and because he was taught so. Too often did he witness suffering and pain when he was too late to relieve it... he was not bitter, however, just a bit fatalistic. He had only recently graduated from Padawan to Knight when disaster struck.

He, along with others, felt the greatest Force disturbance in their records - something like a physical sensation of millions screaming in pain. Maraz, however, felt it the hardest, and immediately dashed to its source against the orders of the Council - understandable, since he knew that the horrible screaming was coming from his own home planet. On arrival, he was unable to curb terror, as he was witnessing firsthand his planet enveloped in flames drawn from the surface of its own sun, and an unbearable aura of the Dark Side: the fallen Jedi Sunaj Aldrenn, the Sith Darth Fernus, was the source of the disaster. Maraz did everything in his power to halt the progress, but was repulsed in all his attempts. He could only watch in horror as all life on his planet was incinerated. At this utter failure of the Light, Maraz's knees gave way, and on his hands and knees, he wept, for all he had believed, or at least wanted more than anything to believe, had been proven false in his eyes.

He failed to notice in his grief that his ship had been boarded, until from behind him came a sneering comment about a pathetic Jedi whelp. Rage exploded inside Maraz as he glared at Fernus, the man who had shattered his conscience. There was no light or darkness. The protection of others was futile - he knew that now from experience. Nevertheless, he needed one thing: Revenge. Charging at Fernus with a howl of rage, Maraz lost his grip on his lightsaber as his hated foe easily flicked it from his hand, and collapsed once more as an unnaturally-powerful fist hit him directly below his sternum. He would have died then and there as he lay at Fernus's feet, but on a whim, Fernus took Maraz as his apprentice when Maraz laughed half-crazily, expecting to die.

Maraz hated his master for all the time he was apprentice, but knew that he could not win a fight against him, and would be better off leeching as much knowledge as he could. Gradually, he transformed from bitter to cynical to hedonistic and selfish as the Dark Side permeated every cell in his body. Feeling restricted by his Sith master's training techniques, Maraz left Fernus without warning to become an assassin, trained with other 'generics' at a Sith academy. That alliance did not last long at all, as the academy was even more restrictive, and to add insult to injury, Maraz was publically humiliated due to an affair with a Twi'Lek fellow student gone bad. Since then, Maraz has been a lone wolf, hunting down Sith and torturing them to death for his own amusement. He thinks little of his old master and treats others (especially women) as his playthings. He has become simultaneously lazy and easily bored, greedy and wasteful, playful and needlessly cruel.
