Explain to me how harming yourself betters yourself? Cutting yourself like this could lead to any number of problems and unfortunate situations, which makes it a very unintelligent thing to do, as to do so would mean you completely disregard future consequences.

It has nothing to do with bettering oneself. Being intelligent doesn't make you magically free of mental health issues. Quite the opposite, actually. There is a direct correlation with higher intelligence and self-destructive behaviors.
I have no authority over you. I'm not pretending to do so. However, I am speaking with great experience on this particular topic, as someone who has been counseling self-injurious teens and young adults for over a decade. I assure you that a high percentage of them are in the gifted or even higher range of intelligence. I'm not saying the act is intelligent, I am saying that it has no bearing on intelligence.
Also, it's entirely a cultural stigma. Scarification is and has been an accepted form of self-expression and/or beautification for thousands of years. Many circles of the body modification community still practice it.

1. I'm not culturally insensitive. 2. When done in self-destructive ways, it's not, and I never said it was (neither is any other self-destructive behavior, by definition). 3. When it's done as a voluntary body modification, it is no more 'good' or 'bad' than piercing or tattooing.

I hadn't looked at her gallery and had no backstory to the person in the photo at the time - I know moronic people that do things like this and some guy came up to me the other week, stopped me and stamped on a pencil sharpener, before making me watch him cut himself.
There are people who would do this stuff and I get the point now that it's not real. Thanks to everyone who replied, but I get the bleedin' point.
