Description This image was inspired by all of the amazing vector artwork that I have seen lately... most recently, Hydro74's website. You can view it here: [link]

I just wanted to see if I could come close to achieving that really ornate detail work using a 3D program.

Created in about 15-20 hours using 3DSMax, ZBrush and Photoshop.

Great work! this must be hundreds of polys!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pixelchemist In reply to ftourini [2007-12-16 04:16:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Actually, it's more like tens of millions... and I can only do this in ZBrush... otherwise I'd use 3D Studio or Modo because they have much better render engines... but they would just crash with all those poly's.

I see, because my computer starts to slow down and finally crushes when i reach 80.000-100.000 polygons in 3ds max!
All your 3d machines were awesome!

I have the same problem with 3dsmax... at about 100,000 poly's it just kind of chokes and refuses to work any more.

Thanks so much!

Actually, what keeps me up some nights is when I don't have any creativity at all and I can't come up with any ideas to work on the next day.

So true! I used to be like that with writing, try to make up stories in my head while drifting off to sleep but art kind of took over. Or like a friend of mine says: "Create! Creaaaaaaate!"

Love this.
But I am just wondering.
Is good drawing skills needed to create the skull and the shapes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pixelchemist In reply to FaustSnake [2007-12-08 23:36:09 +0000 UTC]

My drawing skills...um... SUCK! I have a hard time drawing stick figures. Does that answer your question?!?

Truthfully, I still can't believe what I am able to sculpt in ZBrush... cause I can't sculpt with my hands, I've tried. I think having a good eye is what is most important... I just work the virtual clay until it "looks" like what I want... and knowing how to use the program well is just as important.

...and thanks for the kind words!

I so need to get that program.
Is there a tutorial for that flying around the net as well?
On how to make the metal look or is just to mess around and see what works?

What is the full name of the program by the way?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pixelchemist In reply to FaustSnake [2007-12-09 00:10:06 +0000 UTC]

The full name of the program is "ZBrush 3"... take a look here: [link] ...and the forums are here: [link] ...I also use Modo and 3D Studio to create some of the models and then bring them into ZBrush.

As for a tutorial... you can find a few free ones at Digital Tutors and on youtube but the ones you really want are from "Meats Meier" over at The Gnomon Workshop, here: [link]

The textures either come with the program or can be downloaded at the ZBrush forums... also I post-work them in Photoshop.

Also, take a look at my journal for lots of info on 3D programs.

FaustSnake In reply to pixelchemist [2007-12-09 00:22:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot.
I have a feeling this will really come in handy cause the stock I am looking for is so damn hard to find.

pixelchemist In reply to FaustSnake [2007-12-09 00:34:19 +0000 UTC]

Do you know about SXC? (Stock Exchange: [link] )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FaustSnake In reply to pixelchemist [2007-12-09 00:59:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah.
But I still can't find the exact stock that I need/want.
Like finding a skull that is in the center of the image and looking straight at the camera is damn hard and when I do find one it looks horrible and isn't usable at all.
So I started doing eyes since they are a lot easier to work with and to convey a feeling with.
But I need to start doing something else.
I have some ideas but for now I am going to play around with ZBrush and learn how to use that and things like that.

Good luck with ZBrush... it has a bit of a steep learning curve to it.

FaustSnake In reply to pixelchemist [2007-12-09 01:41:31 +0000 UTC]

In art there is no "Can't do it."
There is only "Haven't learned yet."

What modelling software did you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pixelchemist In reply to paulclift [2007-12-01 00:29:51 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

I used 3D Studio to model some of the parts, ZBrush to construct and render and Photoshop to composite and manipulate.

pixelchemist In reply to exorist [2007-11-28 05:10:41 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much!

As for the number of comments, or lack thereof, I have no idea why. It really doesn't bother me, I just attribute it to not getting enough exposure to the masses here on devianART.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

exorist In reply to pixelchemist [2007-11-28 21:18:32 +0000 UTC]

well, these things do tend to take longer now due to the amount of deviants and deviations being posted here, but talent always prevails and you certainly got that!

i'll make a few suggestions to some of the groups that feature new or underexposed artists around here, im sure they'll be willing to plug your a r t
