Strange. I've never seen it as FLAME BLAST in the old games I have. FIRE BLAST was the one that looked like the giant star because it was the strongest Fire-type move in the game at the time.
I know that they made a new strongest fire move for the starters called "BLAST BURN". lol I think that was on Sapphire or Fire Red. Probably Fire Red.

Dunno it looks a bit like the kanji for "great" in the anime, maybe it's a japanese play on words?
(Like: "great" made of fire = great fireball or something?)
