Description Close Ups: [link]
Edit 1: Just blurred the background a bit to focus more on the character, following the advice I got on the vault.

Second entry for the NWN2 fanart contest:
Sand. In a horrid attempt at an Alchemy Lab. With Radiant Essences. Not liking what's in the blue vial.

Actually, I am pleased with it. Painting this was tiring and my right hand hurts like hell... but it was fun! I actually learned a lot in fabric painting and in skintones while doing this The only bad thing is that whenever I saved it, it took my PC... 5 minutes due to the huge resulution I painted it in.

And now I, after a whole evening of playing, am dead and will now proceed to my resuscitation by playing KotOR 2 until I feel fully restored.

And to humour whoever's reading this, I present you the Elven Sex Dilemma, brought to you by my family while I was painting this!

Supporting father: Who's the chick?
Me: Uh... it's Sand and he's a guy.
Supporting father: Well, he looks like a she.
Supporting mother: And your daughter would like to have ears like that doll does.
Supporting father: Such a lack of taste... And what's with that dress she';s wearing anyway?
Me: *angry* IT'S A GUY AND IT'S A ROBE!
*supporting parents go away, scared of the little monster they've just encountered... the infuriated fangirl(TM)...*

I know... Sand was one of my favorite characters in NWN2... too bad he rarely gets the spotlight.

And thanks!

Very good use of colors, and you captured Sand really well

Thank you! I tried to make him like the in-game model and a bit "cartoony cranky" at the same time and it turned out well. Kind of.

(wow, it seems that now I'm the one extra busy with school and takes forever to reply to comments :S)
But thank you, as always

It's okay. I understand, school can be a bummer. Continue drawing though!

And you're welcome!

I don't think he looks like a girl...you got to hate it when parents say things like that
This is absolutely amazing, your style of coloring is wonderful and I really like his expression, it shows a lot about his personality

Nah, they now tell he's a guy allright... I scared them off really bad with the fangirl outburst! xP
And thank you. It was my first time trying to match the face colors with an envolvent background... Thankfully, it didn't turn out that bad

Hahaha my grandmother wanted to see what I was drawing and accidentally called one of my favorite oc's a girl, I couldn't believe it because there wasn't anything about him that screamed girl to me. She said it was fashions fault, how guys wear their hair all girly now a dayโ€™s
No it didn't, you did a marvelous job on the coloring. I find backgrounds to be pretty hard though. But your colors flow nicely.

Sorry I am so late with my comment I know you posted it at the yahoo group a while ago, too.
But I have been busy like heck and finally found my way around here, again.

Wonderful work. I love the colors and shades. Can only gasp in envy. I guess I am stuck with my cheesy abstract art haha.

It's exactly how I would picture Sand or any wizard in general, working on their essences and enchantments.

And no, he doesn't look femmy. Dunno what it is about male elves looking femmy... *grumbles*
Not every male spunky-broad features just to look like a guy

It's okay Real life comes first, right?

Thanks a lot on the compliments, too! You've just inflated my ego to the point it's nearly exploding.

Indeed, that's true. Elves are not gay just because they have slight, angled features; some of them are even pretty hot But I guess what makes Sand so awesome is that he was written with that sarcastically sly sense of humour, which is great. Especially in the Trial!

Aww, poor Sand being mistaken for a chick. He looks awesome, and I love the detail in the picture. And yes, the hands rock. Go Sand! xD

People go "Long hair = Girl". It's stupid and sexist... Poor Sand xP

Sigh. Tell me about it.

Anyway, the color scheme works, and the hands are impressive, but you may have overdone it with the blurring of the wall. As it stands now, it suggests a moderate distance between the char and the background, which I don't suppose was intended. Cool atmosphere though.

peace

You get that as well? O.O Stupid, stupid people and their sterotypings x/

Gah, the hands. I stared at my own in the mirror for hours until it hurt and still the left one was messy and looks as if it's missing two fingers :S
And yeah, you're right about the blur... It wasn't like that, but some guy over at the nwvault said "Oh, not being blurred detracts from the character" and so, voilรก. And I'm too lazy to go fix it now, meh. I don't feel like waiting 10 minutes for the .PSD file to open.
(man, talk about ranting O.O)

Thanks for commenting though

I love the way you did the hands!!!!! Yay Sand! I also love the use of blues, very fitting for a moon elf.

Thanks I went with blue because it seemed fitting for an alchemy lab (and because I'm pretty color-blind when it comes to other fabric colors, that is ).

I absolutely love it! I don't think he looks femmy, although I think it might be the jawline the might have confused your parents.

I know how annoying it is if people never see what it really is you're drawing. You can't imagine how often I've had people look over my shoulder while I was drawing my little angel dragon Igrette, and hear them say "Oh, it's a goat, right?". IT'S A DRAGON, DAMMIT! *shakes fist angrily*

Or that one bard character I once drew, with long hair. Everyone said he looks like a girl. Though in that case I now understand it, because I was even less accustomed to drawing guys than now. His shoulders were simply too narrow for a guy.

Great work, in any case!

I think my parents are gender-blind whenever they see anyone with long hair; it's the typical Long Hair=GIRL assumption. And elves also have the little factor that they're slim and wiry - so, no muscular build to evidence they're mean, strong males.
Gender sterotyping, that's what it is!

And thanks for the comment and favourite!

I think something like this happens to each of us, even though I guess some people are more prone to make such assumptions than others.

I remember a few years ago on a summer event our art teacher did for usually younger kids (though there really wasn't a set age limit), where for a week you visit different museums around the area I live. A friend of mine and I, who were both above the average age of that event, but still interested in seeing the museums too, also signed up for the event, which was no problem. The only difference was that being older we were asked to help supervise the kiddies a bit. Anyway, one of the kids was a little kid with shortish hair, of which I only was sure, whom I only recognised as female after I had heard her say goodbye to her parents for the day. Apparently I wasn't the only one having difficulty identifiying the gender of the kid, because one day my friend said, with a confused expression on his face "It's a girl?". I replied "Yes, it is. Don't worry, I had difficulty figuring it out too.". Some kids at that age really look a bit androgynous, especially when they have shortish hair like that one.

So yeah, I guess we all have memories of having difficulty telling a person's gender from their looks at one point or another. And especially in real life, those moments are especially awkward. I mean, it's already awkward asking someone for their name because you have forgotten it *again* (I have a bad memory for names, and need some time getting used to them before I can remember them). How awkward is it to ask someone "Excuse me, are you male or female?".

He doesn't look femmy at all o,O;; WTF, supporting parents!

He's awesome, Diana, I especially like how you painted the hands O.O; I wish I had the nerve for full-blown paintings with background and all when I was starting to use the tablet. Heck, I wish I had the nerve for that NOW *high-fives*

Yay, someone doesn't think he's a crossdresser! Thanks a lot, wify! For the favourite, too! ^^

And yes, backgrounds are evil. I just managed this one because it was only composed by straight boring rocks, or otherwise, I'd be in hades by now
