I thought she was a girl when she was first introduced, but it threw me off when ppl were calling her a he and I thought that awhile cause of the fandom. I was confused for awhile, but it actually doesn't say anything about her being trans. She changed her name to protect her identity honor her family and probably also so she wouldn't stick out as much in Japan with a German name. If she wanted to identify as male (or hide her gender for any given reason) she would've picked a more masculine (or at least gender neutral) name, because in Japan, Kanae is a female name.

yeah, canon never explicitly said kanae was trans, but when i posted this comment it was before ishida revealed kanae's motivations for hiding his gender. but even still, i'd like to headcanon him as being trans anyway.

Yes I agree that feminine and masculine are just words that don't really mean anything and are used to classify random things by society that are basically come out of nowhere are ppl are suddenly expected to fall into all these categories and stereotypes (and I think it causes a lot of problems tbh).
But what I was trying to say was that in Japan, with the original translation, ppl probably aren't thinking about that. I have to believe that it's just the English (or possibly other secondary translations). Because Kanae doesn't even seem to be trying to hide her gender. In the original Japanese version, ppl probably saw the name Kanae and automatically confirmed "girl" and continued to think that, especially since there really want anything conflicting it. Like I said I first thought she was a she (idk it just seemed right) and there wasn't anything to disprove that (but to support it, if anything). It was just cause ppl in the fandom that were calling her a he that threw me off. I began to think that, but it was still kind of hard for me to wrap my head around her being a guy. The thing is, if I hadn't seen that I would've just continued to think she was a girl (which of course, was confirmed) and I wouldn't have been surprised. Ppl act like it's some kind of big plot twist when it appears that it was never intended to be.
