Background:

Luminescent Twilight is the adopted child of Night Light and Velvet Sky, two high-society unicorns. As the child of two very well respected ponies Twilight was put into an exclusive school where they met their best friend Sunset Shimmer, Sunset grew up in a very similar way to Twilight which the two bonded over. The two were personally trained by Celestia as candidates to take her place on the throne. The training was extremely intense and after it was over Twilight declined being Celestia's successor and encouraged their friend to do the same. This put a huge rift in between their friendship as Sunset was delighted to take the queens place. Twilight despite being traumatized by all that happened during their developmental years decided to leave Canterlot and move to Ponyville cutting off contact with Sunset and all their previous acquaintances.
