Description New photos from this place: Alvastra 2012

The old Alvastra Abbey, at the foot of Omberg, Östergötland, Sweden. April 2009

Founded in 1143, by french monks, it was the first cistercian abbey in Scandinavia.
It was torn down during the protestant reformation in about 1530. The stones from the abbey has been used in the building of several castles in and close to the area.

Today, there is a modern abbey just a few kilometers from here.

Intressant!

well, many hundreds of monasteries were torned down during the reformation all across europe, it's not very unusal to find these ruins. maybe in most places all the stones were used for something else, i really dont know why alvastra still was left by about half we have many of these ruins in Östergötland, but i have only had the chance to photograph alvastra yet.
and personally i dont care much about the monasteries themselves, i'm not a religious person. i just like ruins, and am glad i can photograph them haha. morbid of me.

thanks you, i'm happy you like the shot

yes, they really look amazing we dont have those kinds of cathedrals in sweden, i want to go to france for example to see some of the really great ones.
and of course, i want to see sagrada família, i love the art and architecture of gaudí, so combined with it being a cathedral, it's simply fantastic

i didn't climb it cos that would be disrespectful
but it was raining when we went there, and so there were these awesome waterfalls coming off of it

gorgeous sight! fantastic!
forgive my ignorance, why is it considered disrespectful to climb uluru?

it was very majestic

dont apologize, it's fine it's the native aboriginal people's property. its more a cultural thing - but it's a very sacred place for them

Photopathica In reply to opportune-moment [2012-05-09 14:25:01 +0000 UTC]

hm, i knew that, but i thought that they have sort of granted turists permission to climb. but i guess that's common to believe, when it comes to every special/sacrd place of native people. good to know, anyways, i'll remember that when i visit

opportune-moment In reply to Photopathica [2012-05-09 23:03:34 +0000 UTC]

well, people are allowed to, but it's very disrespectful.
i went on a tour around the base of it led by an aboriginal man called Uncle Jack
he was awesome!
