True, and I also believe Kalibak’s mother was a rebellious little sister of Highfather, hence his resemblance to his uncle. Darkseid had wanted her to be the New Genesis treaty bride, but she had been promised to another and had to be punished for breaking her oath. Darkseid’s honor code has the most twisted of foundations but he sticks to it like adamantium glue, and has never broken an oath that didn’t have a cunning loophole built into it, (which is often). Tragically, He has never loved anyone else, besides himself, before or since.
Which is why he hasn’t killed his son by her LONG ago for his incompetence. He hates him for being worthless, but swore to her he would always protect him, no loopholes.
Orion he hates simply for NOT being her son. He saw his potential but didn’t love his mother and Highfather raised him, instead. What twists Darkseid’s guts about it is Orien IS otherwise everything he wanted in a son, loyal to his elders, brilliantly competent, and not the slightest dishonorable. Kalibak is a honorles fool, who committed direct treachery several times. Darkseid will commit legalistic treachery, and often, and for petty reasons, but directly broken oaths? And pointless acts of cruelty upon a whim? He has never tolerated such behavior before. It’s what led to the likes of WarWorld, which he regarded as a blasphemous mockery of Apokalips, Mogul his imitator.
