Ironically I always wanted to play piano and or the violin.
My parents never really approved since they're athletic , so I never got the chance no matter how many opportunities came my way. It's kind of sad because if I would have done it when smaller, I probably would have enjoyed it. I actually had knowledge in notes before. But as of now I don't understand the notes or anything. So I regretfully missed out.Β

Ahhhh, stoooop!~ I love the sound a bass makes when you pluck the strings! >w< Oooh, get ready for another tangent, I feel like talking a LOT today. xD Next to singing, musical instruments are a passion for me. At the middle school I went to, they offered free weekly group lessons for band students, and I used to play Alto and Tenor Saxophone. I still play Alto, but I had to quit Band last year in 11th grade two years ago because it interfered with my class schedule. I kind of regret not choosing something else that could have been used in more classical work. Like French Horn or Trumpet, or even flute. In 9th and 10th grade, my lesson teacher was a total Jazz nut, and I sort of despised having to play Jazz music constantly. French Horns sound prettier. ;_;
Out of the stringed instruments, it's definitely in my list of top five I wanted to learn how to play. I think the other four were Piano[that's the only one I'm actually working on actually learning how to play, hehe. Now THAT one, I wish I could've convinced my parents to let me take private lessons for piano at a young age; things tend to sink in easier when you're a kid. I can read notes on treble clef easily and play them, I just have issues reading in bass clef and playing with both hands at the same time.], Cello [I bought a Cello off of Amazon for $150, but then donated it to a local Elementary School because the Orchestra teacher at my middle school wouldn't let me take lessons from her since I was already being called out of class for saxophone once a week. I was so pissed, it's not even funny... T_T], the orchestral harp, and the Koto [something about it, man.....]
Anyways, I'll shut up about that and bring my attention back to the picture now.

in my middle school, many years back, I tried out for band, and I actually got in for French horn (fuck i love that pretty brass squiggle (well the sound more but it is a cool looking instrument too xDDD /shot )
but I wound up quitting, since I did not have the time to practice it at home >m<
also my sister hated when i played it |D /shot I wasn't that good
and then I was in chorus till the start of highschool. It was set up so dumb back then, at the end of 8th grade they made you chose between the preforming arts and the traditional arts /sighs

and aaa that's the worst >A< In my school most of the brass instruments were thrown into jazz rather than the orchestra >A<;
I guess the only really good place to pursue the musical arts is in hella 'spensive private lessons and college >A<
and luckyyyyyy!!! The piano is one of my favorite instruments *A* It's a simple percussion, yet you can do anything with it (speaking of which, Bach, oh man he is the man /swoons)
And there are definitley more piano teachers out there than anything else (since I think piano is like a prerec if you're going to school for music? not sure though, that could just be an old rule |D my parents went to school for music before changing majors XD so they talked about piano a lot, and both are pretty good with it xD )

Hehe, sorry, I would have answered this a bit sooner, but I haven't had a chance to sit down. Dx Time for this big lug of a response. I swear I can hear my fingers crying at the prospect. xD
Eee, I definitely like the sound of plucking on a Bass the best; it reminds me of raindrop, and is quite relaxing. The Cello is a lot like that too, but I also like the sound it makes when it's played with a bow just as much. With the Bass, it's a bit low for my taste in that aspect, but Cello is just low enough to where it still sounds pleasing, and it doesn't reach too high of an octave. I like to listen to a violin as well, but it takes a really good musician for me to be able to listen to the higher notes without it sounding too pitchy or squeaky to me.
Ah, you're so lucky! I chose Alto Saxophone because I was practically raised on Billy Joel's music, and a lot of his songs featured different types of saxophone like 'You may be right', 'Scenes from an Italian Restaurant', 'Stiletto', 'Movin' Out', and 'Just the way you are'. I fell in LOVE with Soprano Saxophone, which they played in that second song, but they wouldn't just teach me Soprano, so I chose Alto instead. It was funny, because my lesson teacher had me test out the mouthpieces of a bunch of different instruments, and I had the hardest time getting a sound out of the Alto Saxophone mouthpiece, but the best out of the flute, but I didn't want to choose flute because my older sister played flute and I didn't want to feel like a copycat. After they let me in band [I had to take lessons for a few months since all the other kids in band had been playing since fourth grade, and i was just starting in sixth grade] and I was there for a year, they let me play Tenor Saxophone, which plays like, a fifth or so lower, meaning that whenever I fingered what would be a C on Alto, it came out sounding like a lower G and I eventually ended up in my middle school's Select Band after trying out, playing Tenor Saxophone. I had to play a school rental though, because my parents had had a hard enough time getting me the Alto. The school rentals were a pain to play. Sadly, to this day, I've never even got to a Soprano Saxophone. v.vΒ
Halfway though the time I spent in High School playing tenor though, I REALLY started wanting to play French Horn. I don't know the technical term for it, but you know those slides that they make in some pieces from a low note to a little over an octave higher? I am in LOVE-LOVE with that sound. I don't know why, I just am. I think I also developed a further appreciation for the instrument because both my middle school and high school bands arranged the saxophone section to sit next to the french horn section. It's to the point that I sort of regret taking up Saxophone instead of French Horn. I've heard that French Horn is a pretty challenging instrument to play, but if I had had the chance to switch to it, I would have definitely taken it. It might have been hard, but it's a beautiful instrument when the right person has their hands on it. I would totally room with a good French Horn player, just to be able to listen to them and try to convince them to give me lessons. =//w//=Β
Well, I suppose I quit band for a variety of reasons; I mean, I could have easily tried out for Wind Ensemble, which is a join-by-audition band and would have fit in my schedule, since it takes up the first half of the period that Concert Choir is put in, which takes up the second half, but I didn't because I wasn't enjoying the material that my lesson teacher was teaching [I like Jazz and all, but Jazz is completely different from the classical music we would be playing in Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble, because the rhythm and counting style are not the same, so lessons really felt irrelevant to me, and I lost ambition to practice. My lesson teacher wasn't even the director for Wind Ensemble, he was a Jazz Ensemble Instructor and a Music Technology teacher! Get this though: This year, they have the Wind Ensemble director running the Saxophone lessons! I was so pissed when I found out. =_=]. I also sort of lost my desire to be in band because band in 10th grade was totally different than band in 9th grade; the director, who was the same as the Wind Ensemble director, ran through things much slower than she did the year before, and it was frustrating as hell. She also had a habit of comparing us to Wind Ensemble, which also pissed me off.....and our percussion section SUCKED ASS. They were too timid when it came to playing, and couldn't count to save their asses. The band in general performed mediocre-ly compared to the one in 9th grade. No one practiced, a lot of people just didn't bring their instrument, and a lot of the ones that did lacked motivation to try and get better. It was frustrating, because I was practicing my ass off [well, my band music, at least; I just stopped caring about lessons.], yet the other two in my section sucked and didn't practice, so my playing never stood out, and I can only stand having to be berated as a section and be told to, and I quote, "shit, or get off the pot", before I just blow a fuse. ...Imagine my surprise when I found out that the kid that was sort of bad at playing who sat next to me got into Wind Ensemble. I started regretting not trying out after that, so I started going to a few lessons after I quit band because my former lesson teacher was okay with that, but he never told me when the auditions for next year were, and I freaking MISSED them, so I couldn't be in Wind Ensemble this year, either. Of course, I won't be able to do it next year either, because this is my last year of High School, and the college I'm already registered to be going to in the Fall has no extracurricular clubs centered around music, much to my dismay. Enough of my complaining though.
That freaking SUCKS though, dear. Having to choose between performing arts and fine arts, I mean. I had to do that when I initially got into high school, because if you plan on taking a fine arts course, you have to take Arts Exploration or Studio in Art first as a requirement before going on to things like Ceramics, Cartooning, and other things like that, and with the way classes were scheduled to take place, taking both Arts Exploration/Studio and Band/Orchestra/Choir would interfere with the ability to take Global I, which is one of the four Social Studies credits you need to graduate, so I couldn't take an art class in 9th grade. I managed to get into Photoshop though this previous semester without having to take Studio or Exploration somehow though [I think it was because my Guidance Counselor overlooked the requirements and I got lucky because he didn't spot it], so I suppose it's alright because the only reason why I would have take Exploration or Studio in the first place would be to qualify for Photoshop. It's stupid that we're limited like that though; most people that choose one of the performing arts courses in 9th grade and choose to stick with it throughout high school usually don't even get the chance to take fine arts classes because of that.Β
Yeah, I was lucky that I began learning saxophone before I started getting into choir to a point where I wasn't just relying on the choir director to feed us the motes for our part; it makes sight-reading and just practicing in general SO much easier. And learning parts in choir is also easier. I notice that many of the other people that sing with in Choir, be it the people in the Soprano II section I sing with in Concert Choir, or the other five people in the Alto section of my Chamber Choir[which is significantly more advanced than Concert Choir, despite the fact that Concert Choir is an audition-only group as well; think of it this way: There are 85 or so people in Concert Choir, and only 21 people in Chamber, counting me.], seem to take a bit longer to learn their parts compared to me and a few of the other people in Chamber Choir that are still playing in Wind Ensemble, be it because of counting problems, not being able to adjust from different time signatures, disregarding dynamics, or other things, and they are all people who either started learning an instrument in fourth grade and dropped it after middle school, or haven't touched an instrument at all. It also helped with my ability to count, but the things I learned about rhythms carried over to my band music, and really helped me learn my parts for band easier. Taking choir and band is actually recommended when it comes to building yourself as a musician, since the skills you learn in both of them carry over so interchangeable. A lot of the people I see audition for Concert Choir actually end up coming over via recommendation of the Wind Ensemble director as well as my choir director. It's interesting, but it makes sense. If I hadn't taken a break from Choir the last year I was in band, I probably would have tried out for Wind Ensemble, but I doubted myself a bit.
Yeah, when I took Psychology, I learned that being exposed or taught something from a young age is more beneficial because your brain is still growing, and is practically a sponge at that stage when it comes to retaining information. My mom signed me up for some sort of majorette class in first grade, or whatever the official term for those people who twirl batons in parades are, and I still remember that shit even though I quit like, half a year after because we couldn't afford the lessons, and don't even mess around with baton on a regular basis. If she'd signed me up for piano instead, I have a feeling that it would be a lot easier for me to continue playing now. There was a unit on piano back in my 7th and 8th grade music class where we learned scales and the rudimentary basics of using both hands to play [It was more like holding a chord with the left hand while playing the melody with the right], and the proper fingerings for playing, but I can't remember the fingerings for the life of me except when it comes to playing scales, with that whole thumb-index-middle-then-tuck-your-thumb-under-to-play-the-fourth-note thing, and I can't play chords by listening to their name anymore. I can still read music though, as long as it isn't the part that's in bass clef...and I've been playing on my rinky-dinky keyboard ever since the year after that unit happened. It's terrible. ;_; The piano's such an attractive instrument; 88 or so keys of beauty there, I swear. Once my life settles down after I get a steady job in my career field, I'm SO going to start taking piano lessons. I'll probably look like a goon, taking piano lessons at age 28 or 30, but I'll do it, just so when I'm basking in my golden years, I'll have something to do besides drooling all over the place, trying to remember where I put my teeth the night before, taking copious amounts of medication to keep myself from getting a blood clot, and pissing myself on a regular basis. .....God, aging looks like such an unattractive option. =_=Β

Then again, I've been quite interested in the aspects of the Japanese as of late; I've been on a manga and English-subbed anime kick for awhile, and I've just gotten interested in Japanese culture, modern and traditional. I'm actually planning on taking a Japanese Language and Culture course at where I'm registered for this coming Fall, as long as it doesn't cause me trouble for the other classes I need to take for my planned major.Β
I actually wanted to learn how to play the harp at one point, until I realized how complex the instrument is; I mean, if my depth perception wasn't slightly altered by my glasses, I'd be more keen to learn it, but there are way too many strings too close together for me.
Actually, believe it or not, I don'tΒ plan on going into music. I feel like if I were to do so, I'd grow bored of it, and I don't want to lose interest in it just yet. My currently planned Major for the College I'm going to this upcoming Fall is Mortuary Sciences; I should be able to pursue it as long as I pass Chemistry this year. It's funny, when I went through orientation, the head of the department mentioned that it was a prerequisite, yet she even admitted that the closest they come to using chemicals is just grabbing the already-mixed embalming fluid in the cabinet. I'm glad that I chose Chemistry over Physiology this year though; if I had to take Chemistry in College, I think I'd die. There's so much MATH and formulas involved, it's frustrating as hell! Dx

also about taking the language; it's pretty tough, I suggest you find things to listen to to help you
like dramas and music
and other things (my sister does this, she's also been taking japanese language for a few years now, so she's pretty good at it)
but it really helps to have more than just a classroom and homework to really absorb the language xD
eventually when you get more proficient, you should find raw episodes (if you're going to be watching dramas and whatnot)
and see how much you can grasp without the english translations as a guide

but the SNK fandom has, for the most part, been pretty tame XDD so i am okay with that
