Description Many long-time readers who have kept up with me elsewhere know about the most recent update... but I never posted it here, so HERE IT IS YOU CRAZY MONSTER-LOVERS!

BOOK I of my longterm, ongoing Silent Hill fanfic "Gravity" has been COMPLETED! To get a scope of just how big this project has been, the final wordcount for Book I was 202,045 words-- over four times the length of the NaNoWriMo novel it was originally supposed to be. WHOAAAA WE'RE HALFWAY THERE!

For those new to my art and writing (or who just might need a refresher after I was, well, GONE for like three years), "Gravity" is a continuation fic (with some minor AU elements) of Silent Hill 2's "Leave" ending, focusing on what comes next for James and Laura. Where do they go from Silent Hill? Where did Laura even come from before meeting Mary in the hospital? If James survived, why didn't did he ever get back in touch with his father? Did Angela really die on that staircase? AND WHAT'S WITH ALL THAT FOG?????

These questions and more are answered using ENTIRELY too many words in "Gravity" so grab a health drink and keep your radio close while you read!

I almost forget canon doesn't say much at all about their life before the disease because the blind spots are now replaced with your fic... and I love the way you wrote the characters, especially James. I want to pat him on the head. And Laura, haha. "Will you kill me too?" boyyy I was actually waiting for her to say that in-game, it's such a natural question for her to ask. Followed by "I'd like to see you try, fartface" haha
Angela, well... I know James feels super bad for not being able to help her, but tbh there's as much chance of him really helping her as with him doing a successful open heart surgery. He's just not equipped to do this. Though I guess he thought he could pull it off when they were sitting in the barn. It was such a sweet moment! ;_; Honestly that's why I like SH so much - in-between of fear and madness there's genuine desire for love and affection, I think that's why it rings so true to so many people. Anyway, I hope that Angela got professional help, don't say anything, it's gonna be my headcanon that she did :V
Also, I'm was slightly giddy that you chose the road trip as the basis, James and Laura just going wherever, escaping all three of the worlds. This idea of an endless road trip fills my heart with wistful feelings, it's so similar to the ones I experienced while playing the game. In fact, your fic has the same energy the game itself does, and I'm full of love right now, and that doesn't happen very often and I'm just glad to experience these feelings of Reading A Real Good Fic again, so thank you one more time <3

YEAH Silent Hill is very much a "show don't tell" canon-- it likes giving us a few subtle details and then expects you to fill in the gaps. Which can be a little frustrating when it comes to deciding what IS canon and what isn't, but I feel like that's part of what gives the stories their power, too.

I'm so glad that you enjoyed my takes on the characters!

A lot of the themes in Gravity are pretty personal, and what's probably the biggest like, CORE theme (especially wrt James and Angela) is something that's been extremely relevant to my life in the past few years, which is that you can't realistically take care of other people when you aren't taking care of yourself. Even if they're worse off than you (which Angela certainly is) and even if you really, REALLY want to (which James certainly does).
I definitely didn't want the message taken away to be that James and Angela's brief friendship was bad or worthless-- they DID do each other a lot of good and what they shared was important and powerful. I really loved writing their budding friendship. But they're still two sick, deeply-troubled people who are completely on their own, and even though James is better off than Angela, his mental health is still circling the drain and he's not equipped to help no matter how badly he wants to.
Don't worry, I won't spoil anything! I will say that Angela's part in this particular story (Gravity) is over, but I absolutely have plans for her and I don't think you'll be disappointed (ASSUMING I EVER GET IT WRITTEN L-LOL).

ANYWAY again, I'm deeply touched that I was able to capture the feel of the game for you-- Silent Hill (2 especially) is so important to me and knowing that I was able to evoke those same feelings for somebody else is one of the biggest compliments I think is possible for me to get! So thank YOU, thoughtful feedback like this means the world to me! <3

You wouldn't happen to have a downloadable version of this story, would you? I'd love to have it on my kindle.

I'm afraid not-- I'm actually not sure how you go about doing that! I AM working on a mock 'print' version of the story as it would appear in book format-- would you just, like, save it as a PDF?

Quacki3 In reply to phantastus [2017-04-29 13:19:18 +0000 UTC]

Save as a pdf or turn it into an ebook. I'll work on it myself, see if I can't get a good copy going

Radical! Let me know if that winds up being successful. My 'mock print' copy is taking a very long time since I only work on it when I have a spare moment here and there, but if you do manage to get it all into ebook form, please let me know! I'd love to let others know it's available.

Aw man, this brings me back. I'd been reading through it and I really love it. Just your style of writing is so pleasing I find myself hearing the characters as they speak.

Gonna chug through the last half tomorrow.

Aw man, thank you so much! Hearing that people can "hear" the characters while reading is probably one of the best compliments a writer can get! c: I hope you enjoy the rest of the story!
