Angkor Wat temple was built in the 12th century in what was once the largest ancient city in history, capable of supporting upto 1 million people. With interconnecting canals and waterways, imagine Venice on steroids. Today, it is the symbol and pride of the Kingdom of Cambodia, a country heavily dependant on tourism and foreign direct investment, in particular China and South Korea. GDP per capita stands at around US$1,000, making it still one of the poorest countries in South East Asia. The country was ravaged by genocide engineered by Khmer Rouge. An estimated 1.5 to 2 million people were murdered and dumped into mass graves called 'Killing Fields'.
