Description This was one of the most exciting things to see while on my trip to Yellowstone. Within 30 minutes of entering the park we spotted a bald eagle nest right off the road. This adult was in the nest accompanied by a sub-adult which it was feeding prior to this shot. I couldn't quite get great shots of them in the nest. However, after watching for about 10 minutes the adult took flight. My friend had turned his back just seconds before it took off and missed the whole thing. I on the other hand got about 18 frames of the bird as it traveled from the nest to a branch about 50 feet away. It's hard to imagine the size of these birds from images, but this bird was massive. My first bald eagle photographed and the only one I was able to photograph the entire trip. We drove by the nest on the way home and neither bird was in there. Such a great moment in a great place

That's beautiful! I wish it was a slightly larger shot since the detail of the face looks phenomenal! A shame your friend missed it.

Thanks! This is a fairly decent crop and wanted to give the bird some room in the frame. I wish there was something in there to get a sense of scale how large they are. And yes my friend was not a happy camper after this hah.

I could imagine! I'd be pissed, too!
I get to see bald eagles a little bit more often nowadays since they're moving back into our area. I'm always flabbergasted at how large they are.

Its rare to see them here. They exist, but they keep to themselves most of the time

Yeah. Same here. But they're starting to get a bit more widespread. It's nice. Where is it that you're located, if you don't mind my asking?

Arizona, We have a subspecies of bald eagles called southwestern bald eagles. There are only a few areas they have been consistently nesting in the desert and they are usually closed off 8 months out of the year. If you go up north you are able to see the normal bald eagles as they migrate through for the winter. The southwestern bald eagles are just slightly smaller than regular bald eagles

I am not surprised.. At a wildlife refuge I got to see two adults start going after a flock of water fowl, and then another time two juveniles. It was amazing. The only way I could tell the adults from the young were the markings, the size was basically the same.

Yeah, their markings are quite different until they become adults. Amazing how fast they grow

Ha I always have to do a double take with these guys because they are not as common out here and once in a while you see one flying around.
