That's terrible! But it happens to me all the time...
I've recently begun reviving my own project for my book, albeit temporarily. I'm not going to approach writing all of that for a while.

Well, The beak is actually a paired gill operculum (kida like those plates that fish have on either side of their head), and the animal would pump water in and out by opening and closing it - I will have to do sime thinking about the species on the left, it could either have the operculi inside the shell, or it wouldn't have them at all, and I think the latter will take over...
The "beak", though previously a breathing aid, is very big in some species and the "clam" can usie it to bite potentioal predators. Funnily enough, immediatelly after I got this idea, I started thinking about making some predatory clams too, which would use their beaks to snatch prey, and they would then inject some digestive liquids inside it, so they can easily suck the nutrients out of it.
"Crocodile clam" what does that sound like?
