Description "Grow up!" they often tell me.
"Get a life!" they always say.
But.... What do they expect me to do?
Send the innocence away?

I don't understand your logic...
You always said the magic was here...
In this place where my childhood still remains,
With no discomfort, sadness, or fear...

Now I'm 'too old' for things such as fantasy...
'Too far away' from the things I once held dear.
You wonder why I act so awkward now,
When you've left me with nothing here!

I've tried to do your bidding...
I've tried to do as you asked...
But, you know... growing up like you?
....It's not such an easy task.

Don't YOU remember these times?
For you, too, were once my age.
You were once in the spot light like I am now,
Thrust upon center stage.

You chose your dismal course in life.
And now look - how distraught you've become!
Yet now! Even with these memories!
You still force yourselves upon your young!

Telling us lies all about adulthood
When you too, are still nothing more than me -
A helpless child, seeking kindness and friendship
In a world full of selfishness and greed.

Perhaps I'm being thick headed...
And if that's the case? That's too bad.
I'd rather be 'immature' and happy
Than be YOU and be confused and sad.

Don't take your anger out on me!
YOU chose this life you've made!
Leave me alone to my toys and games,
And let me be joyful and merry and gay!

...You can join me, if you wish to.
You're still just a kid, like me.
Come! Take my hand, let's turn back the clock!
Let's go back to the way it should be!

No more masks and no more lies,
Just the good days of the past!
Maybe that's the key to being eternally happy -
Making the good times forever last.

So go ahead, tell me to grow up.
Tell me childhood can only last for a time.
I'll simply nod, but shall not respond...
Except with this little rhyme.

I love this. It is almost exactly how I feel when I talk to my parents. You did an amazing job even if it wasn't an improv!!!

Maturity is one thing and I think that it should be controlled just like immaturity is suppose be. There should be a healthy balance XD

Wow. You made my day. I /completely/ agree- people tell me to grow up, and frankly, I'm having fun being young. Okay, maturity is something I have, but only when neccessary, and that's the way it should be.

Amen sister. So long as you have maturity when it's necessary, I see no harm in behaving like a normal human being, having fun, the rest of the time. ^^ .....So long as you're not teepeeing houses, that's different. XD;

A lot of the time, I find that people sacrifice meaning for the sake of the rhyme-scheme, but you did not. I can FEEL the anger and resentment, as well as a touch of sadness... I really like this, Laura!

Poetry really is the best way to get your feelings out... And don't worry about growing up. I can tell you that half of the girls on my floor are more "childish" than high schoolers. As long as you know who YOU are, no one can make you change.

;w; Dawwww, thanks so much, Kelsey!! I'm really glad you like it! ^W^

And I'm not worried about growing up. <.<; I've always been too mature (and then way under-mature in other areas) for my age, since I was like, 12. XD But I'm more worried about growing up like...well..my parents. o.o; I love them, but God, do they hate what they're doing. >~~<; I don't EVER wanna somehow find myself stuck in a position where I despise everything in my existence. @.@; That's prolly my biggest fear. Actually, second biggest, but yeah. XD
