Description

2015 is closing, thank you everyone for your support!

Here’s something special yet embarrassing stuff to show you.
When I was making it bring back soooo much memory I almost cry.

What I’m about to say is purely my personal opinion, it might not be true to everyone.

Back then I was so scared to upload my stuff here on DeviantART, but I’m really glad I did because it was such a wonderful site to learn.

I’m self-taught, all I did is just keep drawing. When I first uploaded my stuff here, no one would like it. So I always tell myself “looks like it’s no good again, try better next time”. I kept doing this until someone finally bother to click like, and even comment. A lot of new young artists back then will go to each of every person’s page who liked their artwork, just to say thank you, I did that too.

By keep drawing, eventually I got more followers, more likes, more comment and more motivation. I’m not gonna lie, I don’t draw for World peace, I draw for praise, because it is what keep me drawing, and keep drawing will make me better and visualize my imagination better, and it will lead to more praise, thus the cycle.

I draw BL because I’m gay myself, I find myself smiling like a silly whenever I saw BL stuff. I want to create more of these thing that would make me, and the LGBT community that I belongs to, smile more. So that being gay, being in love with BL is something to be happy about.

A few things I learned from these years drawing:

1. Enjoy drawing. I have seen quite a lot of new artist who just pick up drawin

g, ask for critic. I don’t know about you but personally I don’t find critic to be enjoyable, especially after you spend hours or even days drawing, only to get “hey this look weird that bad etc etc”, for newbie the first thing is you need to find drawing enjoyable! You can ask for critic later after you get used to drawing.
My parents ALWAYS praised my drawing since child, I start doodling since 3-5, and no way a 3-5 y/o drawing would be good, but still my parents praise me, I then keep drawing hoping to get more praise from them, it is what started to make me feel drawing is enjoyable.

2. Don’t draw for free / for a cheap price. This might sound harsh but it is true, when thing is free people will just ask for it without thinking how much effort you put into it. I used to accept free request back then on DA but only to find that some of them have tons of pics drawn by other artists for them. The drawing which I spent days to draw only make up a tiny part of their collection which they probably don’t even remember. You might as well work on your original drawing or comic.
Don’t charge too low, if you need money for tablet you might as well work other part time for it, it will be much faster and you save more time to draw more later.

3. I used to keep searching for tutorials, after reading bunch of them I find that most of them are telling more or less the same stuff, there is hardly any tutorial that would magically make your drawing better, a lot of people ask me I always tell them: all you need to practice.

That’s all I can think for now, thank you for reading. I hope this meme will somehow inspire you to draw. Happy New Year! (again)

You have no idea how much I look up to you. Your breathtaking works are the reason why I studied the anime-meets-realism painting style and I literally studied every strokes you create and mimic them (the details on your Toukenranbu postcards, oh gawd I'm gagging for breath with every little detail and backstory you put there), fusing it with mine, trying to find the style that I'm comfortable the most. I would not say that I'm 'there' yet, but every time you post your art on your social media, I keep getting inspired by you and get even more motivated to improve myself.
I won't be this far without you, so I would like to say thank you very much for being an inspiration. Keep being amazing, I'm looking forward to stalk your works xD

all this time I thought you're either Japanese/Korean because I knew your works from Fakers' Affair in Pixiv and I'm glad you speak English so I can say this to you without Google Translate hehe

I shall stop speaking before I sound like a stan qq

Thank you, when I am new on deviantART I was inspired by a lot of artists here, but I never have thought I would be an inspiration to someone.

Keep up with your drawing!

The jump from 2011 to 2013 it´s outstanding and I have no words for it. I always thought, since the first moment I saw one of your works, that you were an amazingly talented person. And I´m so glad you draw BL! Because I love it and not to mention when it´s done by some artist I really like staring at his work. By the way and just to mention, your Ten Count fanart was one of the nicest fanarts I´ve ever seen and I´m not exagerating. OMG YOU ARE SO GOOD NEVER STOP DRAWING PLS.

Wow, I have to say that the progress you've made is quite impressive. It's fascinating how you can see your own personal style coming out more and more each year.
I do wonder, however, why half the pieces on your timeline don't seem to be in you gallery, especially since some of them are actually quite nice. In particular I'd love to get a closer look at the 2010 & 2011 pieces.

Yeah, that happens sometimes. As long as you continue to create artwork though, I suppose it doesn't matter what account you do it under.

;3; The parts where you really applied yourself to learning BGs and characters is inspiring. I've recently been through a really painful heartache with plenty of disappointment from the past couple of years, but seeing things like this raises my hopes and always cheers me up. So while I'm really happy for you I'm also really excited to catch up to people like you!

Forever 18 huehuehue

It's awesome you're capable of drawing BGs. ;u; I usually have a hard time with urban settings and I'm actually kinda okay with landscapes and rural settings. Though I don't draw them a lot lol.

I really like how you can see your style come in to it's own in 2012 and it's developed really well from there.

BG is the hardest for me... I can never think of anything to put in it, or I can visualize it but not put it to paper. :/ But thanks for posting this, I find these inspiring and cute, xD lol.

In just one year of being 18 you learned sooo much! It's inspiring! Haha but seriously there's a marked effect after you studied realism and pushed yourself to draw tons of bg and characters. Since you had a job before, can I ask how you managed your work/drawing balance?

PenguinFrontier In reply to boychik [2015-12-31 20:39:31 +0000 UTC]

After I got back from work I just try to draw as much as I can until sleep time.
Weekends are big bonus since I can draw all days.

I personally find that drawing with a small goal/theme helps motivating myself.
Eg: Draw a set of postcard / small comic instead of random head.
You get to tell a story while practicing, your audience will get more (story/message) out of your practice too.

boychik In reply to PenguinFrontier [2015-12-31 22:10:55 +0000 UTC]

That's good advice. Since I'm in university I have even more work to do after I get home, but I guess the same method applies. There's no ideal solution so just gotta draw whenever possible :< do you find that you had more free time with work compared to school?

This is also great advice! This way artists can work toward a better vision of the kind of stories and themes that draw them in~I think this new year I'll start giving myself mini challenges like this to make art more fun again. Thanks for your advice and happy new year, Penguin! ^-^

PenguinFrontier In reply to boychik [2016-01-01 03:51:05 +0000 UTC]

Hmm I personally find both are about the same.
Back to the days when I am still studying, I am very busy with assignment. (my college is kinda different all schedule is tightly packed)
My only free time to draw and upload to DA is when I got semester break which is about 3 weeks or so, I will draw all days when it comes.

When working I usually have a bit of free time everyday, but I can't have long holidays like semester break.

I was late to take art seriously and did not get a chance to study art in college, so I will need to spend more times to catch up the others.
