Description This is from the no.7 DVD cover of Astroboy โ€“ AKA Tetsuwan Atomu. I love him! he's so cute I also like Kenichi, Rino, and Atom(I wish he'd wear clothes more often! โ€ฆfor those who don't know Astroboy, he's always only wearing all he needs really ) His best clothing was when he was wearing a suit.

The 2003 Astro Boy is my favorite Astro Boy series ever.

You're right, Astro does not wear a lot, but he does not really need, does he
But sometimes he does not want to show up, and you see him wearing kids' clothes ^_^

As you remember, what does Nina say to Atom when she sees him in the cabin on the tree?
It's the Pigwidgeon episode, with the new Minimini machine.

I would really like to watch the Neverland episode...

I don't know why they changed all names; Astro is good, but Shibugaki is NOT Abercrombie, and Kenichi is NOT Kennedy.
Those series are all bonded, the new ones take from old ones and there are quotes everywhere, even in names (Atom - Anton... it's amazing!).

You did it, it's very very good

Think about it though, here's an empathetic machine who was built with the outlook of a young boy, and all he wears on a daily basis is glorified underwear and red boots. He is a robot who was designed this way from the beginning so technically I don't believe them to be 'clothes', but even then, my mind kinda goes 'Japan, what are you even'. And I am Japanese, so even more of a 'Japan what' goes on here. xD I find him the most adorable when he's wearing casual clothes anywhere. Formal clothes โ€“ I can die happy no just jokingย (ยดใƒฎ`)

Yeah the changing names in anything annoys me, but especially manga and anime since particular ones hold a special place in my nostalgic heart. Is Nina his primary school teacher? See, I'm honestly confused who it would be. I have the series on DVD but in Japanese โ€ฆ I probably won't recognise changed names at allโ€ฆ

Thank you

In the 2003's anime there's an episode where we meet Friday, the Story Teller, a robot given for a present to the young Nina. Her story is almost the same to Tobio's one and even to Hanna (Ena), in the same series: she's all alone, and her father wants to buy her love with presents.
I think her name was the same. Is the second and last episode where we meet doctor Minimini.

I watched all the original series, with English subtitles... well, if you can call it English!!!
They made criminal cuts everywhere, they changed all names... And I finally watched the Neverland episode. I still don't know why they wanted to make Atom easier to understand: he's a complex character, he's not simple. And if I want to turn my head away, I'll do by myself, I don't need someone else's hand to close my eyes with stupid censore.
I liked the English dubbing because Atom... well, Astro, speaks a bit more. But I also know that all new lines are just clichรฉ. That's not good.
Tenma's and Atom's English voice are great. But I don't want them if I have to see a totally different show, where they changed Atom's heart, making him different, a sorta of Superman.

I think Atom is very cool wearing clothes, expecially in 1980's series (the new year's eve, when he puts on the kimono) and in 2003's episode when he meets Boon. But when is in his normal and usual outfit, why on earth he would be ashamed? He is like this, he IS this. And I adore this particular feature.

Oh yes I didn't immediately remember Nina, I assumed it was a dub name Superman Atom would be pretty weird for me too Atom is a great character, and I'd love to watch the older original series too at some point.ย

They cut all the cute scenes, and the ones where he plays with toys. They wanted to make him less a kid and more a superhero. Instead his nature is to be a robot AND a child, you can't erase one of these features, just to make him easier to understand.

They made him a bit cheeky and impertinent, makin' him saying he does not want a "sibling", assuming it is a sorta of disease, or being a bit rude with Tenma ("You're creepy" or "Haven't you got anything better to do?").
I laughed at it, but he was not like this in the original work; he's always polite, a bit submissive, and I think I reckognized some Japanese courtesy forms, not easy to translate in other languages. You could help me in this
Atom never speaks like this with anybody. Even when he's really thinking about killing Ranpu...

To tell you the truth, the first time I watched the 1980's series, I was 7 or 8 years old, and I found all those stories and atmospheres nerve-breaking, oppressive and too cruel. Now I can see better what did they do; 1980's anime were always dramatic, too dramatic... maybe was because of the specific atmosphere of those years.
Now I revalued it. The only flaw I see is... I miss doctor Tenma: I expected him popping up here to save Atom, and there under the cover of the Arabian scientist that in that series built Pluto.
Instead he desappears in the second episode, and probably dies somewhere... the less giulty of Tenma's version, has to be doomed like this...

They reintroduced this character in 2003's series and my wish come true, making him a great opponent, complex and interesting... I can't see him as a real villain... They made a great job.

Always anime lack in dialogues. Translators invented new parts, but I have to swap them with cut scenes. If they put both their works together, it would be great.
But they betrayed the original character and messed up all the original story.

There are some Astro Boy fans around the world who ask here and there if Tobio is still alive somewhere.
A good job ruined. -_-

They had their chance to make an American Astro Boy in 2009's movie. That's is not bad, it's fun. And dramatic, and moving, and full of action. But they made him almost a teenager, an American teenager. And even if master Tezuka appears as a character himself, I don't know if he would appreciate it.
And, in one of the final scenes, "Bill" (???) Tenma says a thing about female robots to his housekeeper robot. I hate that point: it's not Futurama, is Astro Boy after all!
If you want to put some realistic or not that clean features, you have to put them from the beginning, not to smuggle them when the story is almost over.
And I don't like the very last scene: if Atom meets an alien, he's not the first one attacking. He defends people, human and machines, and if he can help, also aliens.
In 2009's movie there were no difference between humans and robots; instead, in original Tetsuwan Atom you could always see who was what, even in the cases of human-like robots.

They took some surface features, and left all the rest. I can say it's not bad, I saw it even in Polish... they could put the good of this and of the original, but they did not do.

I hope they will in the last series, that's up to come in september.

Have you seen my other Atom drawings at all? My personal fav is the watercolour one with him aiming with the hand-ray-gun (or so I call it). I really like him too
Do you know "Pluto" by Urasawa Naoki? It's amazing! The story's from Tezuka's "The biggest robot on Earth" from AstroBoy. I've recently bought "Monster" by the same artist, but it's taking ages cause it's from Japanโ€ฆ Yes, i read it in Japanese! Envy me! muahahahahahahaha!!!!! *phew* :tilt:

yeah I did it with color pencils. When you're drawing Astroboy, it looks a bit strange at first, but it looks better once you've finished all of it. The coloring was good fun! right, black and white coming upโ€ฆ

Well its really good, how long did it take you ?

Pen-scribble In reply to Saiyma [2008-01-12 22:50:34 +0000 UTC]

Err, like between half of or an hourโ€ฆish. Unlike the other one (black & white), this was copying from a picture so it was easier then having to worry about pausing the DVD. It's good fun to draw Astroboy, you know.

ATOM!! YAAAY!!...Well done!! The coloring is excellent!! Atom coming to the rescue...
Yeah, I agree that he should wear more clothes, but we're always reminded that he's a robot...His best outfit in my opinion is his school clothes.
....I like Rino and Kenichi as well as Epshiron...and Ocha-no-mizu hakase...Oh and Atlas(aka Daichi)
Oh, and I almost forgot: I read somewhere that there's going to be a Astro Boy movie planned to be released in Japan in 2009!!.....OMG....

I did another one, have a look if you like! oh and I saw the last episode of Dennou Coil yesterday, and it was rather sad. I really like Haraken *eyes scene of Yasako & Haraken together*
