Rather than buying trinkets, it makes me want to build the ships themselves. Β I know how, too. Β Give me money and a hangar sir, and I will make you all happy.

And of course, this offer comes about when I'm in the middle of a college degree program. I don't think I could give you enough money for a *toy* airship. TT^TT

This I know, it is frustrating. Β A rigid framed working model of such a ship of a length about 25 feet would cost into the thousands after the mylar and coverings for the internal gas chambers were concerned. Β The engines would not take so much money as they would time. Β

Why does your zeppelin have smokestacks?

to vent exhaust from the carter-mann type boilers that power it's engines......
why else?

Boilers are made of metal and that would hamper the zeppelin's performance and also release sparks that might cause a fire.

PaxAeternum In reply to AceNos [2012-06-24 05:06:17 +0000 UTC]
hardly. The first great dirigibles were steam powered. In case you have forgotten, diesel engines are also made of metal, heavy cast iron blocks that contain crankcases and valves. Boilers that are solid fueled by poor firemen may produce sparks, but this is hardly an issue with a helium filled envelope. Why is it that all simple folk think zeppelins by default use flammable gas? That having been said, these boilers burn natural gas, atmospheric weight when pressurized and clean burning. High efficiency compounded uniflow steam engines have far greater stall torque at lower speeds than diesel engines do, therefore are the perfect choice for an aerial vehicle.
Remember, a zeppelin does not get it's lift from it's engines. Also, look up the Besler steam airplane for other aviation steam engine uses.

It would be neat if the lighthouse doubled as a mooring tower. The dirigible reminds me of the Bondonase (sp?), one of the early zeps; very nice.

Thank you! I based her loosely off of the old first war zeps with a bit of LZ-4 thrown in the mix.

helium actually. Every LTA or Semi-LTA ship you ever see draw or conceive uses helium. Gotta love that stuff, not dangerous but ten times better than hot air.

not unless you hate dieselpunk.
it's all 1930's-film-noir-flash Gordon-Buck Rogers-stuff, robots, Nazi-style baddies, RAF airbattlecarriers, but the opening has a Zeppelin (Hindenburg III, to be more precise) Docking at the Empire State Buulding.

not really, look at Henry Giffard's steam airship of 1852. Purely for the purpose of pioneering flight and exploration.
Ferdinand von Zeppelin may have been a genious, but he was a frightful war-mongerer. I turn to idealists like Santos Dumont and Hugo Eckener, who's dreams of the airship were both crushed by wars and facism.
