Description 25 character portrait sketches of George R. R. Martin's "A Song Of Ice and Fire" series of books (A Game of Thrones).

Some head drawings ranging from very rough to cartoony to semi-realistic of some of my favorite secondary characters from the books. (sorry for any spoilers)

This is amazing! Love how they're more from the books rather than from the series

Thanks!
I try to only draw the characters that I haven't already seen represented on the television series.
I started reading the ASOIAF series after the first season came out on HBO, so that's why there are no main characters.
...Difficult for me to not think of Sean Bean as Ned Stark!

Thanks Olir!
I drew them a few years ago as I was reading the series but before any of them had appeared in the tv series.
Lots of fun! Looking forward to new characters to draw in the next book(s)

Aaaah just wonderful. Love your Ramsay and your Hodor! Illyrio reminds me of a whale, which I think it's an accurate description of him.

Thanks, I had a lot of fun drawing them!

It's nice to see many of these characters finally making a first appearance in the new season of the HBO series.
But it looks like I went a little too "Bigfoot" with my sketch of Wun Wun.

I love this! Its good to see some art from someone who has read books rather than just seen the show. All that minor character love is great!

That's why I only do the secondary characters, because the tv show's mostly excellent casting makes it difficult for me not to see the main characters any other way.

interesting interpretation of some of the characters, especially lord beric. i pictured him looking not unlike a more muscular yet still big Santa (still with his scars and stuff). also, isnt rorge missing his nose? or is it biter. idk

great job overall. the artwork is quite good

PaulPhillips In reply to Grimsrasatoas [2012-12-15 19:19:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
Yep, Rorge should be missing his nose But whenever I sketched him without it he ended up looking like an Orc so I compromised w/the disfigured sneer.
I have to admit that I never had a great mental picture of what Beric should look like. Which is why he's so cartoony. I relied mostly on his unique set of mortal wounds to describe him.

Speaking of Biter... [SPOLER?]
...I suppose there's another version of Brienne I need to eventually draw.

They were initially an exercise to reacquaint myself with book illustration by interpreting the written word into detailed visuals. But it quickly developed into this nerdy tribute.

that's great...but please tell me how's possible that you like Ramsay Bolton... or Biter, or Rorge, or Walder Frey, Craster and Melisandre... these characters are really detestable!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PaulPhillips In reply to frauccia [2012-07-28 05:20:53 +0000 UTC]

Love to hate characters.

So despicable that I look forward to seeing them suffer the consequences. And without awful characters like these, nothing interesting would happen to the "good" characters and they would be kind of boring, story-wise.
But I wouldn't include Melisandre in that group. Like Jamie Lannister, her viewpoint chapters reveal (to me at least) that she isn't really that bad. Just bad first impressions filtered through other likable viewpoint character's biases and misunderstandings.

frauccia In reply to PaulPhillips [2012-08-04 22:50:00 +0000 UTC]

I haven't read any Melisandre point of wiew yet...in my country "A dance with Dragons" has been divided into three parts; I'm at the beginning of the second book (starting with Prince Quentyn Martell going from Astapor to Mereen disguised as Frog) and the third book will be out on October. I agree with you that she isn't the same as the others characters I mentioned in my previous message, but the idea of people burnt alive gives me shivers...

PaulPhillips In reply to frauccia [2012-08-05 00:12:46 +0000 UTC]

Wow, A Dance with Dragons divided into 3 books.
Too bad they're making you pay for 1 book 3 times.

Makes me think of what Peter Jackson is doing to The Hobbit movie
(divided it into 3 movies released over 3 years)
What country are you from?

Yes, the thought of being burned alive makes me sweat.
