Probably my largest and most complex drawing to date, taking over 60 hours and measuring 60cm X 50cm it depicts Count Ugolino della Gherardesca, his sons Gaddo and Uguccione and his grandsons Nino and Anselmuccio. who were all imprisoned in the Gualandi family's tower and sentanced to starve in March 1289.This event in history was imortalised in marble by the incredible sculpture and artists Jean-Babtiste Carpeaux in 1861, which now sits in the New York Metropolitian Museum.
Drawn on unbranded smooth Bristol Board Paper with a range of pencils from 4H through to 8B.

Hi Paul, i'm pleased that you decided to add the dark background. It was a beautiful drawing cut to white but this version really brings out the sculpted form so much more ... Good choice.

Thanks Mark, I find a white background the easy (and maybe lazy) solution to most drawings, however the black background can also bring the picture forward and enhance the main focus

Thanks the one thing I learned from drawing this was that anyone who can sculpt something like this must have amazing vision, the ability to imagine something in 3D and then to recreate in solid form blows my mind - i find it harder enough to just try and make sure it doesn't look 'flat' - glad i have convinced you at least
