Description EDIT: 24th Feb. 2011: Finally got around to correct the earring thing. As I got a chance to buy a piece of real copper myself some time ago, it became pretty clear that the amount of copper used in the money system was waaaaaaaaaaaay too heavy to be held in a canine ear in the amounts that was originally written here. Now it makes more sense.
Research to the rescue!
(Plus the tiny copper piece looks pretty neat.)
(Also tweaked the levels a bit, now you might actually see something as it's not that pale anymore.)

As our "heroes" are now entering (or have entered. I'm going on page 65 right now) the dog lands, I have done some concept doodling about the subject. The culture of dogs is already living it's copper age, and the precious metal has become quite popular among them as it is rather easy to make into stuff like tools and such. Although the dogs trade lots of stuff to other stuff (like pelts for food etc.) but the availability of copper has introduced the concept of money alongside of the trading.

The value of the coins is determined practically. Two standard sized "half fangs" can be melted and made into a "fang" of standard size, four fangs can be melted together to form a "bite", and four bites can be melted together to form a small knife tool (referred to as "half knife") for cutting, skinning and other household work, and two half knives can be melted together to a bigger knife that is more useful in stuff like tanning (or rather scraping stuff off from the skins) and stuff. The shape of the knives vary more than fangs or bites, as the those are used for trade only (or sometimes as decoration) where as knives are real working tools and thus are shaped in a way that fits the whatever work they're needed in.

As all canines are more or less territorial, dog villages work similar to packs. There are travelers and strays that don't have their own land, so they wear some of their money on their ears where they are clearly visible. Earrings tell the other dogs owning the lands that this is a traveling individual or a group who are just passing through and don't intend to stay, and they can also be used as a ransom ("Hi, I'm just a humble traveler, and I have this much copper on me. If you must attack me, please take the copper instead of my life").

I realized that the drawing on the bottom might be a bit unclear, but the dog on the left is holding a string full of fangs and offering a bite on his other paw to the dog on the right, who is handing a knife to him. Judging by the earrings, the one giving the knife might be a traveling merchant, or possibly even a traveling copper smith, although judging by the small amount of earrings the merchant seems more likely.

World design is fun.

EDIT: I recently got to buy a small piece of real copper myself, and the stuff is waaaaay too heavy to be kept in a dog ear in an amount described here. Half a bite would be the absolute maximum possible to be held in one ear, so imagine the one fang sized jewels here to be half fangs, and the big earring as half bite at most. kthxbye.

Can you smelt the knife and half-knifes back into fangs and bites?
Do the dogs use other metals than copper?
What's the most valuable thing(s) in the dog world? Least valuable?
How far away from each others do the packs usually live?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm really curios and have been a fan for a good while.

If they are mining copper, they may also be starting to notice and enjoy natural gemstones. Those would be a bit easier to carry and use for trade, along with the copper.

Are there trade-guilds for some of the crafts of your world? Coppersmiths, miners, carpenters, tanners?

Do they have baking?

Actually, they probably wouldn't use precious stones as automatically as we do. Copper is useful, as it can be made into different kinds of things and reshaped when necessary. A broken knife can be repaired without needing to make a whole new thing that would waste resources. Gemstones are just stones that look pretty. I can imagine some dogs collecting them for their prettyness, but they probably wouldn't become an instant hit.

Hmm, I might a definition of what makes a guild. While all packs are more or less self-sufficient, some packs specialise in some arts. There are potter packs (like the one we saw housing Soo and his lot), there might be packs concentrating in hunting and preparing specially fine leathers and fur, packs living near copper mines can be miners and packs living near ocean or salt deserts might specialise in collecting and selling salt. And so on. And then there's of course travelling packs with no home territory that travel around the world as merchants selling and buying stuff.

Shortly: Yes. Gee, I ramble a lot.

Do they have primitive smelting technology? Obviously they know how to use heat and a forge to shape knives and copper bits. Are they using elemental copper, or do they know how to refine the raw ore? Have they encountered tin yet? And from there it is a short step to bronze, which is far more durable than pure copper or tin.

I should think being a traveling merchant would be fun. Lots of new scenery, a chance to buy and trade goods of all sorts, and of course, carry the news. News might be even as prized as trade goods?

Do they have bards or a bardic or story-teller tradition? Traveling troubadours? Or the skald -- the one who recites poetry and eddas?

Without writing, someone needs to carry forward the people's history, genealogies, and stories. Your pages at the start of your tale imply that sort of tradition.

Can young-adult pups from a pack with a guild-skill like your potters join a pack with different skills if he or she has the talent and desire?

And rambling is great!

They do know how to smelt copper. You can "make" copper rather easily in some places. There is this certain compound found in nature in real life (which name eludes me right now) that looks like reddish brown stone. You can burn it in a simple campfire, where the fire burns off impurities leaving just pure copper behind. I've done that myself, at school's chemistry class years ago.
Other than that copper has relatively low melting point, and when liquid, it can be pored into clay molts that are easy to make with the dogs' stone ageish technology.

Travelling merchant packs tend to be quite a sight in themselves. They often include a wide variety of people that have joined in from various places, and merchant packs are often the only way southern type dogs can ever see northern breed and vice versa. It's not uncommon to find entertainers in merchant packs, like storytellers or even exotic dancers. Having a pack of merchants come to a city can be quite a sight. (I'll probably have a tiiiiiny bit of a flashback in the comic soon, where I can probably sneak in some pictures of Azrabak's former pack to show what kind of bunch these packs can be.)

Sure young ones can switch packs if they want. A pack is basically an extended family (or couple of extended families joined together to form kind of cities) so it is only natural that some individuals join neighbor packs, possibly find a mate from there and bring their knowledge with them. Sometimes more adventurous youngsters join travelling merchant packs to migrate further away from their home packs and maybe start a new life elswhere.

Copper's fun stuff. My grandparents went to a copper mine awhile back and brought me back a teeny little bottle of little round balls of copper. It's heavy. But still my favorite color and favorite metal.

Dunno if I've said: I'm in agreement with the dozens of "great concept!" comments. ^^

What part of the logic? If you like the earring thing, then sure! Go ahead, it's directly yoinked fron real life anyway, pirates wore golden earrings that enough value that if the pirate died, his funeral could be paid with the earrings.

What would be an interesting follow-up concept to this would be the execution of using the tools or forging them.

You've revealed that wurrs dont really use tools to hunt or other things, so it would be quite cool to peer more into the dog world.

Would they perhaps have semi opposable thumbs to work with? or maybe you've conjured some sort of theory of evolution for the dogs making them different from ours?

you always put so many questions in my head with your concepts and designs.

Paperiapina In reply to the-lazy-artist [2010-07-12 17:11:56 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I sure have had fun with planning and designing the canine species of Wurr. From the beginning of the comic it has been decided that their front limbs bend more than real life dogs', and although their real thumbs, the dewclaws, are way too short to be reallu useful, they can bend their forefingers to oppose the other fingers as a wannabe-semi-thumb of sort.

Hmm, I should probably draw another concept about it...

I LOVE well thought out stories--Wurr is definately one of those stories, bravo!!
Interesting info you've given us here...I love learning about the world of Wurr. This is interesting, and I'd love to see more little bits of info like this about the different cultures.
I must admit that I wonder how exactly they manage to work with the copper and stuff with just paws, but from what I've seen in the comic they use their paws pretty nicely as hands....;3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Paperiapina In reply to RaeSM [2010-07-12 17:09:17 +0000 UTC]

I should probably draw some kind of Wurr paw concept. Wurrs (all canines in the world of Wurr. At least hellhounds, dogs and wolves) have a lot more flexible front limbs than real life canines, and they can bend their forefinger to oppose the other fingers, much alike a thumb (their real thumb is too short to be really useful in any way). I have tried to show it in the comic, but I guess that when my drawing style is semi realistic-ish, people assume easier that the character are like real canines too.

Although there's no way for Morri to dig his ear or Surama to joke about Badjaw if their paws would bend like real dogs'. x)
