Description PS CS3
1,5h of work - a bit too long but painting is still something new for me and I'm still trying new things and different techniques.

what technique do you usually use to create the cosmos scenes?

I don't have any special techniques. I usually use the photos of clouds, some various surfaces or fractals for nebulae. For planets I use satellite photos of earth or other planets and photos of surfaces like earth, concrete, dry cracked mud etc.

I'm always surprised how many good space artists havn't tried "painting" anything in Photoshop lol...guess I always just did both from the start that's why those who do space art alone are usually better than me at that, whilist those who do painting alone but no space art, will often do a dramatic landscape that mops the floor with mine...yet will have planets that seem to "ruin" it in my eyes Oh well, each to their own, good that your'e starting, since more digital artists who want a job in this media would require basic painting skills (we may love space art, but only a small portion of even sci-fi games or movies will require it)

That's true, I know what do you mean. I also saw a lot of works with mindblowing terrains and original buildings but very unrealistic planets that were ruining the whole impression. Anyway, I started to paint because I think it gives you many more opportunities. For example, you don't have to spent many hours making a right terrain in terragen, setting the camera and waiting for the render. You can paint everything or use the terrain you already have and add some details but of course you need to have some skills. That's why I started doing those speedpaintings.
