Description
Look at this fiery boy! Despite his fiery good looks and dazzling eyespots, this fellow is rather shy. Let him lurk in some foliage if he feels like it!This one was simple enough in concept, but I got to wrestle with some fickle red pigments in the process. Despite that, I think he turned out great! I especially enjoyed the tree action on this sheet. Fantasy epiphytes? Yes!
Winsor & Newton watercolors, Caran d'Ache supracolor colored pencils, touches of gouache on Arches 140 lb hot press watercolor paper, 11.5 x 16" (27.94 x 40.64).

very beautiful . this one is my favorite so far as I love phoenixes. your aequis are always so amazing. I am curious though what is a Aequis? it kind of reminds me of a hippogriff being part bird and part horse. Is that what it is or something else? keep up the incredible work.

Thank you! And yes, you are correct: Aequis are based on my efforts to design a more believable hippogryph/winged horse, so that the various elements are more fully integrated as opposed to looking "patched together." They're still kind of evolving on their own as time goes on.

Thank you! It's been a long and continuous journey to get them to look like their own distinct thing, yet being obviously inspired by real animals. It's a tricky line to walk sometimes!
