This is an American Kestrel. You can tell this by the two black stripes along it's face. The one going under it's eye and the one along the side of it's head. If you have a look at photos of the American Kestrel you can quite clearly see that, where as with other birds of prey you can't.

Looks like a Kestrel to me (the red tint of the breast feathers, the two distinct markings in front of and behind the eye. Do you know if it is an American bird, European? Kestrels are found widely throughout the world. But you'd be right on both guesses, Kestrels are indeed falcons

Pakurno In reply to caper-dj [2012-02-29 17:04:38 +0000 UTC]

I was seeing photos by Internet and this one is very similar to a kestrel... I think it is a kestrel.

VioletDragonian [2012-02-29 02:58:17 +0000 UTC]

My first thought was falcon, but the ones I saw at a bird show a while back didn't have face markings like this.
I've never seen a kestrel, though.
Watch yourself, though. These things have a nasty bite. Oh and those claws too, don't handle him without leather gloves. Do you still have him, was he injured or was he okay and you let him loose?

Pakurno In reply to VioletDragonian [2012-02-29 16:59:51 +0000 UTC]

It had Leather straps in both legs so I think it belonged to someone and it was lost by the city.
I freed it from my window.

VioletDragonian In reply to Pakurno [2012-02-29 17:25:36 +0000 UTC]

Ah, jesses. Jesses vary a bit, but are always for one purpose: Tying the bird to the glove. Usually, there's a metal piece on it's leg that some leather cording can tie unto, then to the glove, and the cord can be either short or long, depending on what you need the bird to do. This could have just been an improvised version.
Yes, I've done my research on Falconry XD

Pakurno In reply to VioletDragonian [2012-02-29 17:32:43 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I heard about that before but I didn't know entirely.
I think you can see those jesses here: [link]

VioletDragonian In reply to Pakurno [2012-02-29 17:46:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, those look like jesses to me. I've never seen any up close personally before, but I did see them on the birds they had in that show I saw last year, plus pictures on the internet.

Looks like he could be a kestrel - correct me if I'm wrong though!

(just read the below comments - that must have been a suprise finding him in your room!)

Pakurno In reply to Somebody-Somewhere [2012-02-28 22:52:49 +0000 UTC]

I've looking pics by Internet and I think you are right!
All this time I though it was a little/young falcon.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Somebody-Somewhere In reply to Pakurno [2012-02-28 23:04:09 +0000 UTC]

Ah, some kind of falcon looks about right too!
Kestrels are the only real raptor that I've come across which look like this, hence why it was my first thought!

Still one of my favourite shots in a long time though!
