To be honest I actually liked the dream/nightmare sequence. In my opinion Shepard probably feels guilt for leaving earth. (My opinion doesn't matter, so don't reply to this)

I really hated those sequences. It was the first time in the series where they forced a particular emotion/reaction onto the player/Shepard. I personally felt nothing for Earth. I'd hadn't even thought about Earth throughout the series, all I wanted to do was save the Aliens, but the game is like "Earth is in some kind of trouble! You are a human! You are a devastated!!"

Exactly. What made it even even more laughable was that they never established what made earth so important.
Shepard: OMG earth is the most important planet in the galaxy (for no plausible reason), abandon your homeworlds aliens, and help me take it back!
What the aliens should have said: We are deeply sorry for what is being done to your people, but THE SAME THING IS BEING DONE TO OURS!! So no, we can`t risk the safety of our worlds for yours.
What the aliens actually said:
Turiens: Abandon palaven! Earth is more important!
Turien soldiers: wat?
Asari: Abandon our colonies! Earth is more important!
Asari commandos: The fuck you smokin?
Krogans: Forget Tuchanka! We need to save earth!
Krogan warrior: Uh, isn`t our own world more important?
Casey hudson: No.
Krogan warrior: Oh, Okay.
Volus: we have to-save the-shepards world!
Volus soldier: But what about-our world?
Casey hudson: (whispers into volus commanders ear) Save the shepard. Save the shepard. Save the shepard......

Yeah... It was a bit a bit of a pickle, where to plan the showdown. And if it was going to be on any races homeworld, I guess Earth is a bit of a given since it's a game made for earthlings, but you could make a better reason... how about any reason, for a start? It's insinuated that Earth is taking a larger beating than the other planets, but we really only have a few characters' word for that. Palavan looked pretty fucked up to me, and Thessia went down the toilet entirely, so... there's that.
Bioware often gets praised for good writing, but really, what they do is good characterisation. That's only one aspect of writing, and when it comes to plot, they're still susceptible to the short comings of videogame writing that we haven't grown out of yet.
The whole "If you loved the Milky Way galaxy, you're going to love Earth!" selling point of ME3 seems to have stemmed from ME2's writing. That the collectors were interested solely in humanity because the dude/chick who blew up Sovereign happened to be a human, and that humans are apparently genetically special and diverse, it all speaks to some clumsy attempt to make humans out to be some kind of modest galactic master race.
