Description Second Capetian count of Artois, legendary on his own time. He was seemingly excessive at everything, even in death, for he found his demise at Courtrai, among the cream of the French knights. Robert, among other things, had a pet wolf, was an inveterate jester and was infamously wealthy. He was Robert III d'Artois' grandfather (who I protrayed some time ago: oznerol-1516.deviantart.com/ar… ). I based it on his great seal; however, I omitted the many fleurs de lys emblazoned on his horse and surcoat.

Might be an unusual topic for my first artwork this year.

Very good indeed, his pose looks perfectly moving, and I especially like the fall of the folds on the horse's neck!

Thanks. I looked for horses clad that way to use as reference, usually the cloth folds that way, more so when it's tilting or something similar. It was hard to make, I couldn't get it to look convincing at first. Oddly enough, the helmet was the toughest part to figure out and draw.

Interesting - neither the helmet nor the coat look as if they made any difficulties. You mastered them well!
On second look maybe -and I really mean just maybe- his arm is a tad too long (compared to his leg).

THANKS, glad you like it. It was drawn without sketching too much first, I was glad to capture the motion almost immediately.

Truly glad you think so. I've wanted to do an equestrian portrait like this for a long time.

He's such an interesting character! I'd love to make a portrait of him during one of his jests!
