I kind of wanted to explain Fern's curse a little more
So basic her own blood is poisoning her and causes her bouts of pain, (which are usually accompanied by those briar marks (they move around her skin like snakes when they show up) and the worse the pain the more visible and the more abundant the mark are. Most of the time they are like mild cramps, (unpleasant but she can ignore them for the most part, but the are times when they are extremely painful. )

Now where it is basically poison to her, it is a miracle to others. Her blood has healing properties and can heal wounds. (a big down side being the worse the wound the more blood needed)
This is one reason she is very nervous around strangers,
Yaya (the old woman who found her) warned her that some might want to exploit that part of her curse
So Yaya told her not to let anyone find out about it
