Description It's been a little while longer than I expected, I am currently in Canada now, and I'm going to use this as an excuse for the long wait... Plus no scanner means no traditional works. sadface.

I think this could be considered a sequel to the Masked piece: [link] perhaps even an antithesis to my commentary from before.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is that the masks that we wear to the outside world can be taken off, only to reveal a darker self that cannot be swallowed easily in everyday society. But it's a freedom that can be exploited if we have enough balls and confidence in our own identity. Then again, 'identity' is somewhat of a loose, amorphous term with many dimensions. I'm not sure identity can stand on its own, it'll be like developing a negative film with too much exposure, the glare will bleach all recognizable features.

That t-shirt makes me think of the Gatchaman characters in civilian garb. You might know them from Battle of the Planets.

oooh I don't think I've heard of this series before, but I'm really digging your association with a superhero figure XD

Your commentary reminds me of my senior year of high school. Before then, I put up this facade and was basically nobody, not even 'me'. However, once I decided to just be me, things just became 9000x better. I noticed people enjoyed the random, nerdy, frequent-Pokemon-references me a million times more than the oh-it's-you me.

I like your style on this. It works well with the theme you were aiming for. The fact that the face is still partially obscured adds a bit of mystery to this girl who is allegedly removing the mystery. Cool picture

Hahaha I enjoyed your mention of Pokemon, that word totally stood out when I first glanced at your comment I'm actually curious about this 'oh-its-you me' actually. Are you speaking of a 'me' that comes up when you're alone, as in a self need not need to fit into any social situation? Moreover, I don't think you can be nobody completely, I guess it's more like being a mime and dressing up in someone else's mask. Or copying their design.

Oooh the irony in your observation of mystery is intriguing, I didn't catch that but now that you mention it, I love it! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, it provoked many of my own

The 'oh-it's-you me' is actually more of a social creation. I usually feel uncomfortable in social situations and do not say much at all. It rarely takes people more than a few minutes to realize 'oh you're quiet aren't you'. I haven't though of it too much before, but as I have been writing this reply I have come up with a few ideas to its origin. I grew up with a large family (youngest of 6) and being heard was not exactly something that happened too often. This gradually wore me away to the point where I became antisocial even when around my peers. It’s now to the point where 20 years have carved it in pretty deep, and I can literally feel a strain whenever I try to work against it. However, when I'm alone, I do stuff such as work on drawings of werewolves and post deeply personal messages to random people on the internet (like right here ). I feel that these actions are probably reveal more of β€˜me’ than the antisocial β€˜me’ that tends to come out in social settings. I've made good progress in breaking my habits, but I still have a way to go.

I guess that is a cool thing about art. Others can see what the artist did not even see. I guess I could relate it to my observation to what I have described as the removal of the 'mask' being a gradual process. Of course, your use of wonderfully rich color on the face was what really made me realize it. My eyes immediately went to it, and I love the depth that I can see in her face. The mask contrast the face by being much simpler and flatter. It gave me the idea that the mask was simply a flat disguise while her true self is much deeper than was observable with the mask. It’s a truly wonderful piece.

Thankyou kind sir, you have delved to the utmost deepest into the concept behind this piece of art, i guess it's true when they say that a picture is worth a thousand words huh! I'm thrilled that you have found such revelations in her face and the mask, this far exceeds my expectations of what I'd expect people to get out of this piece. As for personal messages to randos, I think these are underestimated for their worth and I'd like to parallel them to strange acts of kindness Quite brave of you to post this in public, I must say. Youngest of 6 huh, that must have been a hullaballoo of an upbringing XD

In my opinion, being able to establish a personal connection to a picture is the highest form of art appreciation. It is certainly not the sort of thing which an amateur artist can hope to convey to an artist. You are an amazing artist.

Wearing a mask is part of something we need to do everyday, in every diferent situation we need to be a diferent person, and perheps what is under it all is not a dark self, just a shapeless form
I guess, in the end... every mask is what we are, cuz even a dark self would be a mask

wow took me 30 minutes to type this nonsense xD

Anyway loved this piece, im still amazed by evey single one of your works

No it's not nonsense at all! I feel like what you've said parallels this phase which I'm going through right now. Sort of insecure about what really defines a person, like you will act differently with different people, but does that make you two-faced? Yeah you're right, the term 'dark' also fences in a full definition of self, possibly boxing it in the depression category haha, but it can never describe a full personality. I guess what I mean by dark = hidden, unable to be exposed? I don't know, see that took me a good half an hour to think up too, so we're even? Thankyou for your two cents.

This is...creepily similar to a work I did in high school. I like yours a lot better though lol. I did mine just as I was learning to use acrylic paint, and it was a bit of a gong show.

Oh what a coincidence! Now I'm curious, you should show me what you made so I can fully understand the term 'gong show', since that's the first I've heard of it

Lol, oh there I go, ruralling it up again. Gong show...basically - went as bad as it can I'll see if I can hunt it down. I think it's up in the attic somewhere.
