Description Lifesize bust made from industrial scrap steel punch parts and fencing swords.
The Seer is the short title. The long title is "Bow Watch for Humanity". This is a reference to sailing where you are navigating uncharted or unfamiliar seas and so you ALWAYS put the person with the BEST eyesight (here used in a metaphorical sense) on the extreme front (bow) of your ship or craft to warn you of impending danger, or (again metaphorically)complications in the future.
This could be a Maori Tribesman of four hundred years ago(notice the spiral tatoos),or an inner city street kid from Chicago, but WHOEVER it is, they have the means to guide us BACK to the PATH.
The hairpiece is made entirely from modern day competition fencing swords.
Technique;
I took a body mold (head and shoulders) of one of my students(Native American)when I was teaching at Berkeley.I used the negative mold as a guide and filled in the inner surface with industrial punch parts ONE AT A TIME as I welded them in. These were generally about 3/8ths thick. I have very firmly WELDED each to it's neighbor progressively until the mold was full and the form accomplished, choosing as I went where to accent negative space and also the shape and size of the punch parts in the composition.
The hair piece consisting of the fencing swords is very heavy and a rather unruly shape. Again ,I took GREAT PAINS to make sure the welds holding all this together were stout. And I have done my best to blunt the tips of the swords ,just for safety sake. There has been at least one accident where someone ran into this thing too fast and got scratched, but they took responsibility for their own actions...
I'm using a wirefeed welder (MIG). the fencing swords are all high carbon steel so they weld really well. The spiral "Tatoos" on the face of the figure were also done by free hand welding ,sort of drawing as I lay down a bead.

This piece is available for purchase.
Please note me for pricing.

Thank you Cassie,
I took extra time to make sure it was really solidly welded cause the thing weighs over 100 lbs.

really nice one! i love the fact that you have used industrial scrap! the "spikes" or "hair" is a nice controversy for the more "traditional looking" bust i think it would look even greater live...

Dear Stephen,
following an earlier comment on your wonderful sculpture I would like to point your attention to a rather new group called the they recently started accepting sculpture, and are really on the look out for good sculpture. I was sending them the link to your work.
see correspondence under [link]
As the traditional sculpture is still underrepresented in DA (unfortunately) I see there a good opportunity to support and create a valuable platform for our medium. Should you not yet know the platform, I would like to ecourage you to contact them, contribute to the group gallery or affiliate yourself as a member.
Stay well!

maybe its my background in running these turret presses and punches that produce these slugs, but ive always been completely entranced by your slug art. this piece is no different.

its posture commands respect.

now from the description it seems some time had past between making the mold, and using it... did you have an initial vision when molding the pose and hows the end result compare?

where the hell did you get a stash of that many swords?
that would be a sweet find at a scrapyard

Thank you kindly,
One of my students at U.C.Berkeley was throwing away a thick plaster mold of his face at the end of the semester.I grabbed it and the next day had started the piece. The foils epees and sabers were given to me by my fencing instructor, RIP(Died in a head-on motorcycle wreck). He worked at a fencing supply store and had collected bent and broken swords used by competing professionals that were returned...On my birthday he presented me with a crate of about 100 pieces...

Did that make ANY sense?

Any alternative personal or subjective interpretation of my art is perfectly acceptable.
That is causes an interactive internal dialogue (with you) the viewer is it's raison d'etre IMHO.
Whenever we interact with art our interpretation is dependent on our personal history and life experience. If the work hits us strongly, then we tend to overlay the template of our lives upon the image and create our on storyline to make it "fit" in our matrix of conceptual reality. I see this as a type of magic that Art allows...

Thank you friend,
As we approach the turning point in our relationship as a species with the planet,to change our course for the good of all over selfish and temporal self interests,or face our own utter extinction, this imaginary figure becomes more and more of an important manifestation, though in truth we cannot look to another to solve all our ills but must reconsider our own personal actions and how they impact the world at large...

SilverKhaos [2008-09-24 07:26:27 +0000 UTC]

It's hard to pinpoint exactly what I love about this piece, but I think it's the vibrancy that is well-expressed in the medium--a boldness that can only be accomplished with metal sculpture that's tempered by refinement and finesse, here. I'm very aware of form in this piece; the contrast of enclosed space and projected structure is incredibly striking. I like that the face is upturned as well, as though turned toward the sun, when the back of the figure's head is sun-like in itself.

Basically, I appreciate metalwork a lot more having seen this bust. I'd love to really get a good look at this in a gallery!

Thank you SilverKhaos,
Good observations all,
The piece is in C.C.Design Gallery in walnut Creek ,Ca.
My value (if any)as I age seems to be greater as an inspiration, than the sum total of the pieces I've fashioned.
Your ending words prove this.
