~

There was this idea in my mind to create several pictures inspired by stories I love but which are not very well-known. This new drawing is inspired by a song my parents and I love deeply (sea lovers as we are): de Vondeling van Ameland, by the Dutch singer Boudewijn de Groot. I did not follow the beautiful lyrics by Freek de Jonge quite literally, since it was my main aim to grab the haunting atmosphere of this song. By times it has got this really ominous, tragic sound in it.

The song is in Dutch, but I tried to translate the lyrics for you (don’t be too harsh on me if there are any mistakes please. And be conscious of the fact that the words really miss some power in translation). So at least I can share this story with you all 
The reason I wanted to share this little story, is because it tells about this really really strong desire to be where you belong. The song always gives me many emotions, because I know those feelings. It is like some search for freedom, to be part of the waves and the wind. I am sure at last some of you would really understand that feeling to stand on the beach and to feel a connection with the sea I consider it as something very special.

And you don’t want to know how many shades and colours are lost because of scanning. It is a SHAME -_- I knew it would be bad this time since I was working with warm and cold colours in the same picture, but I had not expected it to be this bad  Oh well.
This drawings was kind of challenge btw, with that water and clouds and the male body O_o They yet need some improvements, but still I feel relieved I finished them.

And yeah- I’m going to look for the reference

---
On the beach of Ameland he was washed ashore as an infant, thrown overboard and bound to a buoy. The waves had felt for him like he was still in the womb and he kept screaming until he was found by a beachcomber.
Ameland cried out in shame of the beachcomber, an eccentric man who lived by what wind gave to him, who already had found the strangest of things –
And now again he got himself that child?
Every day when he went out for combing the foundling had to go with him. After a year, when he began to talk, the first little word he uttered was “Sea…”

On the beach of Ameland the kid played for many years. The beachcomber was his teacher and taught him wise lessons. The foundling stood astride in the sand, unafraid of the wild sea, yelling until the tide was turned.
Ameland cried out in shame of the kid, that foundling shouted as the wind! How on Earth was it possible that the sea withdrew for a child?
What he cried out no one would say, that was difficult to understand from afar. When they asked the beachcomber, he said: “I think he cries: I’m on my way”

I’m on my way, I’m on my way! Sea, wind, sun and ocean… I’m on my way…

On the beach of Ameland the lad stood in the evening sun. He did not say a word, he slowly began to undress. The flood-tide came to meet him, he saw nothing but the horizon. Once more he turned around, then he walked into the sea.
Ameland cried out in shame of the lad, that nude strange foundling. The people had gathered on top of a dune, because one felt something was about to happen. And then suddenly he began to shout, so loud that the sounds came to the dunes. A little moment they saw him walking on the water, before he sank into the depths and drowned…

I’m on my way, I’m on my way! Sea, wind, sun and ocean… I’m on my way…
