Description EDIT: I finally got a chance to upload the changes I've been making to this piece - especially on Big Brother and a few changes to Little Brother, according to advice and critique given by peers and teachers! Thanks especially to ~morninghasbroken and ~BlueFlamedPhoenix , and any who gave critique on the thumbshare forums!

The world has changed a lot since the days of the Old civilization ended... oh, what's it been, five, six thousand years? We thought most of the remains of their society had rusted away eons ago.
Even so, people still hunt down the ruins of the old machine-cities to pick at the scraps left after the Purging War; the alloys they created are impossible to duplicate, and they're worth a fortune, if you can find enough.
That's what brought me into that city, but I found something far more valuable: I found Little Brother.

It is done.

My final project for Advanced Drawing is done.

And now, to sleep.

Photoshop and Corel Painter X

Big Brother and Little Brother belong to me.

Great job for an edit, but I personally feel like you should have just re-drawn it since you made it so long ago, just to demonstrate your current skill level.

I suppose. I'll have to throw down a sketch of that and see what comes of it.

You think this has potential as a story?

JaredGrammer In reply to Otacon144 [2009-07-14 00:55:15 +0000 UTC]

I don't remember the story behind, but if you think hard enough and try to avoid sounding the similar to another story then yea.

In a nutshell - a young man goes into the ruins of a Machinist city, looking for treasure, and ends up accidentally activating a 2000-year-old worker drone, which, having no masters to take orders from anymore, starts following him like a 15-foot-tall mechanical puppy.

The specifics are still up in the air at the moment, but I at least have that to start on.

What do you think?

JaredGrammer In reply to Otacon144 [2009-07-14 01:59:16 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, Does need work, I see it as there should be a shroud of mystery, and there's more to the robot then there appears. Maybe the city is long forgotten (like no history remembered, forbidden) the kid stumbles across it, attacked by some wild life, and is saved by the robot, and they go on a quest of the world helping people.

Dunno, man look at some stuff for inspiration and twist and bend it into a story.

I think I've got a good pitch line for it, though.

"A young treasure hunter finds himself the accidental master of an ancient robot."

This was me being experimental - usually I leave the linework and paint under it, but this time I decided to paint over it and see what effect it would get me.

Thanks for looking!

Biggest issue here is that the subjects almost blend into the background. If you make thier forms a bit crisper or the the background darker you could avoid this problem.
great rusty metal

That sounds like something out of a book I'd like to read ^^.

And how you find the patience to paint robots is beyond me... D8

I like the texture you made on the metal. What brushes do you usually use when you use Painter?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Otacon144 In reply to mausmouse [2008-07-08 05:46:41 +0000 UTC]

Me, too, sometimes... though having your semester grade riding on it helps.

Painter still confuses me a bit. I mostly stick to the oil brushes - simple and smeary round brushes, and the oily blender on occasion, though the Just Add Water blender made that AWESOME plume of steam coming out of Little Brother's exhaust vents.

I'll admit, I painted the basic color and some simple shading in Painter and did most of the rest in Photoshop, including the rust texture on the metal and the smoky red background.

I'll probably keep working on Big Brother. I'm not quite satisfied with his hands or his face.

...but I'm NOT touchin' his boots! I got those PERFECT.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mausmouse In reply to Otacon144 [2008-07-09 07:58:41 +0000 UTC]

Hey cool! I use oils too . I use the wet oily brush. It works great for blending.

I see a lot of digital painters use the same technique: lay it out in Painter and finish it up in Photoshop.

If you ever get an art block when touching up Big Brother, I suggest looking at photo references of people. That tends to help me a lot ^^.

Yeah, you're right. You got the leather looks perfect.

I'll remember what you said. Thanks.

Any other brushes you think I should try?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mausmouse In reply to Otacon144 [2008-07-10 07:37:52 +0000 UTC]

Nope. I'm pretty stuck on the oil brushes

But I thought some tutorial stuffs you might like to look at!

This artist uses Photoshop. She has a hair tutorial that helped me a lot with my Mad Hatter painting: [link]

And this artist is just plain awesome in general. I don't use his technique fully, but I learned a good deal of stuff from his tutorial that I still use on my art. : [link]

Thank you very much! I tried going for something new with this one; normally I just color under the line work, but I decided to try painting over it this time. I'm still not quite satisfied with how Big Brother came out, but I'll work on that a little later.

That was me fiddling around with some of the brush settings and layer styles in Photoshop. Amazing what a little doodling around will get you sometimes, huh?
