👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Orzel In reply to MikuHimuro [2011-06-21 13:05:42 +0000 UTC]

Yes, just as Light explained, it's a peacock tail feather.

*gasp sputter die* It's not a tail feather, it's a train feather! Peacock tails are actually quite dull...

Orzel In reply to WyrmsRoost [2014-02-19 13:58:16 +0000 UTC]

That actually depends on the angle you look at them and what light passes through them - peacock feathers have indeed structural coloration.

WyrmsRoost In reply to Orzel [2014-02-21 23:00:22 +0000 UTC]

Many of their feathers, yes. Like this train feather you have pictured above. But not all. In a previous comment you have mistakenly identified this as a tail feather, which it is not. Their tail feathers are a dull dark brown-grayish color.

This immature peacock is showing his tail feathers in this picture: www.californiadreamsphotograph…

The peacock's colorful train for which it is famous is actually made of feathers from it's back, not it's tail. The stiff, dull tail feathers are used as a support to hoist the magnificent train into the air.

;-; Right now I can't find any good pictures illustrating this important difference though...

Yes, you are right, they are not rectrices, they are tail coverts, my bad. Thank you for correcting me.

WyrmsRoost In reply to Orzel [2014-02-25 12:01:42 +0000 UTC]

I'm not as familiar with the anatomy of a bird's plumage as I would like to be, it seems I have made a slight mistake here. I had been told that the feathers that are in a peacock's train originate from the back of the bird and not at all from the tail.

Hmmm... Upon further research it seems as though the splendid long plumes of the peacock do indeed originate from the caudal feather tract, which would make them tail feathers...

You were right, I was wrong. My whole life up until this point has been a lie!   Woe is me!

Orzel In reply to WyrmsRoost [2014-02-25 13:55:37 +0000 UTC]

Well, I guess that technically, yes, they still could be called 'tail feathers', although the true tail feathers are the ones that you showed me in that link.

We both learned something new it seems!
