Description My Mermaid, coloured.

This is my first time really doing something in Painter. I've been too scared before to do anything but cell shading. But there you go.
And I'm pretty impressed with myself. Pastels and Blenders.

Feel free to leave any advice or comments.

Thanks for taking time to take a peek.

You artists and your crazy colours. First, you do orange flesh with blue shadows, and now Artgerm follows suit. Ack. You people.

I am going to echo the advice I gave deaddays earlier today. Don't be afraid of dark colours. Your technique is fine, but you generally want the centrepiece of a picture to have as great a difference between light and dark as you can manage. That gives it definition IMHO.

Here's an example of what I mean. I created a Levels Adjustment Layer in Paint Shop Pro, made the darks a fair bit darker, and tweaked the lights slightly.

Secondly, pay attention to light and shadow. Her tail has a shadowy side, so I think she's looking in the direction of the sun. Her bangs should be casting a shadow on the left side of her face and also on all the hair behind them.

The next step could be a simple fill background with, perhaps, a shadow and some random brush strokes for texture. Yellow-brown would suit this particular pic.

Don't mind my criticism. This is a great start. As a "photographer", I am nuts about light and shadow.^-^
