I am going to echo the advice I gave deaddays earlier today. Don't be afraid of dark colours. Your technique is fine, but you generally want the centrepiece of a picture to have as great a difference between light and dark as you can manage. That gives it definition IMHO.
Here's an example of what I mean. I created a Levels Adjustment Layer in Paint Shop Pro, made the darks a fair bit darker, and tweaked the lights slightly.
Secondly, pay attention to light and shadow. Her tail has a shadowy side, so I think she's looking in the direction of the sun. Her bangs should be casting a shadow on the left side of her face and also on all the hair behind them.
The next step could be a simple fill background with, perhaps, a shadow and some random brush strokes for texture. Yellow-brown would suit this particular pic.
Don't mind my criticism. This is a great start. As a "photographer", I am nuts about light and shadow.^-^
