My second of three submissions for the Portrait Photo Challenge hosted by DA & Fujifilm. This past summer, I had the habit of trying to take a lot of photos of my parents’ Border Collies (though I consider them mine as well even though I don’t live there) with the intention of making a nice photographic gift for them with the photos, but sadly, I haven’t moved on that yet, but I was nudged by MegapixelMasterpiece to submit a photo for the contest, more for the fun of participating than anything. So, after filing through several different photo shoots, I came across six photos I had it narrowed down to. Picking one just got hard and since I can submit more than one, I limited myself down to my top three for various reasons.
Here we have Mattie. She is one of three of my parents’ Border Collies, and is also the oldest as well as lone female of the group. She in particular is very personable, humanoid, and stubborn to a fault. Lovingly referred to as “the twit” by myself. She pretty much thinks she’s alpha of the house, even over the humans…until I show up and then she knows I outrank her. Amidst all of her qualities, she is very expressive and full of personality (all on her own time, of course).
This photo was chosen for entry and I have found natural outdoor lighting is my best bet for photographing these active dogs the best with the least blur, especially with contrasting black and white fur. Even here, there is some problem with overexposure in the white fur and I wish I had centered her better in the photo, but because this completely captured an element of her spunky personality, this had to be an entry. Nothing bad happened here for her to be pouting; she merely wants me to throw the stick she brought over to me. The photo is completely raw—there was no cropping or post-photo manipulations to alter any hues/contrast/brightness, etc.
