OneWingedMuse — So I Don't Like Twilight...

Description Like that's a surprise, right? Anyone who's seen my work on DA would know that. And yes, I am a girl. But really I know a lot of girls who despise this series (and a lot of guys that worship it) so that really shouldn't make a difference. Though sometimes it comes as a surprise to some people. Like it's a requirement for girls to like romance... But that's another debate for another time.

I've seen several of these "anti-stories" posted up and decided to share my story too. It's far more mild than most. I was never attacked by twilight fans. Or had things chucked at me, or was chased, or mobbed. Granted I graduated high school a long time before Twilight was written. Thank god for that.

When I was in middle school, Pokemon was the it thing. In high school, it was Lord of the Rings. Oh, how the times have changed.

Anyway, I didn't start out disliking Twilight. I had friends who read it. I even had a professor or two who spoke highly of it. Which looking back on it now makes me feel queasy. My writing was often compared to that of Stephenie Meyer's. At the time, I had no idea who they were talking about. Now I feel pretty insulted- even though I don't think they meant it as an insult.

But I started with an obvious bias against the book. I despise vampires. Everything about vampires grosses me out. There was never a time in my life were I enjoyed a vampire story. I have a tendency to pass out at the sight of blood (more specifically my blood), like Bella (insert shudder here). But unlike Bella I have convulsive fits. Probably not so romantic to have Edward holding up a girl going through an exorcism like seizure. So there you already have one reason that I don't like Bella. She swoons but somehow remains conscious and semi-coherent. Which only seems to me like she's faking it. When I'm out- I'm out like a light.

I wouldn't have lasted one week in the Twilight world.

But anyway, I went off on a tangent there. What I meant to say was that I have my reasons for disliking vampires. The fear of blood gave way to a fear of vampires as a kid. I hated the idea that there were imaginary (or not) creatures out there that drank blood. The image was just so disgusting and terrifying to me that I grew an intense distaste for anything vampire related. Anything remotely vampire-like (like a character in a movie or novel) would turn me off from the entire thing. (I also despise tulips. Damn you Alice and Wonderland/Hook for your creepy tulips!)

I eventually grew more afraid of Banshees as I got older (long story). But I still couldn't even fathom the idea of vampire stories. I was just completely uninterested.

However, when my friends started reading the series I grew curious. I decided to read the first few chapters to see what I made of it.

A rule of thumb for me, if I am not interested in the story by page 2-5 (sometimes even from the first page), I consider the entire novel a bust. I read to chapter 2 after having fallen asleep while reading it not once, but twice.

Already the book had several strikes against it:

1. It was about vampires.

2. It was about a high school girl.

I hated high school with a fiery passion and have no desire to revisit it in any novels unless the school gets blown up or aliens invade at some point. I still have nightmares about being back in high school. Reading a book about high school instead of giving me a sense of familiarity with the story- made me really hate being reminded of high school.

3. It was about the new girl in town.

I was never one. I grew up in a place where a lot of military families lived. My family was not one. Often times I would make friends and then a year or two later- they'd be off overseas. It always seemed harder for me than it was for them. I was stuck while as they got to escape. I was always jealous of new kids. So when a new kid is complaining about being new, I start to despise them (just in novels. In real life, I can sympathize... mostly).

4. The girl was insta-popular.

This was something I never was but always wanted to be if i moved someplace new. I used to read young adult novels growing up all the time about the new kid on the block who hates being new but then instantly makes new friends. I was never new, as I said earlier. I lived in the same place for eighteen years. Still living in the same area that I grew up in, despite being in a new house. Insta-popular people. I have no sympathy or patience for.

5. The girl was extremely judgmental.

I don't recall the exact phrases she used for Eric. Oily perhaps? Whatever the case, her snap judgment about the nerdy Eric pissed me off. And referring to Mike as being "loyal as a dog" annoyed me too. I never think of people in that fashion. Especially not if they are being friendly. I had nothing in common with Bella.

6. It was predictable.

The school day was a school day. She was new, new kid things happened to her. Nothing in the first chapters (excluding the prologue) screamed "READ ME, MORE INTERESTING STUFF WILL HAPPEN". Even the mysterious popular kids were so obviously vampires that there was really nothing to look forward to. I didn't feel like I needed to keep reading. I knew what was going to happen- I didn't even really care.

7. She addressed her parents by first name (but only behind their back).

This was a huge turn off for me. It seemed incredibly disrespectful of her to be referring to her father and mother by first name. Now this just might be the way I was raised. But I only ever called my parents by name to get their attention in a crowded public place when they weren't reacting to Mom or Dad. They are my mom and dad. And I address them as such. It would be shocking for them if I called them by their first names. Not to mention very impersonal. Now if this was how Charlie or Renee wanted to be addressed- that would be fine. But that's not the case. It was something Bella decided on. She doesn't think of Charlie as Dad. She thinks of him as Charlie- the man who lives in my house that I have to take care of and keep secrets from. She does not think of Renee as Mom either. She thinks of her parents as children. Absolutely appalling.

I know some teenagers feel this way about their parents. I wasn't one. I disagreed with my parents all the time and talked back a hell of a lot. But I never felt like they needed me to take care of them, or that they didn't deserve my respect. I still considered them my parents, my elders and thus deserving of a measure of deference. An opinion Bella didn't seem to share.

The only thing that kept me curious was the whole Edward looking as if he were about to barf that first day of class. But even that wasn't enough to keep me reading. I simply asked my friend what the weird face was about. "It was because she smelled so good. He was trying to resist eating her." "Oh really? Huh. That's actually kind of... gross."

But even with all these reasons stacked against the series, I didn't hate Twilight. I just thought it wasn't very engaging, well written, or interesting. I thought it had a lot of unmerited hype but nothing that came close to being the smash that Harry Potter was. Which was interesting, well written and engaging. I cared about Harry. I worried and wondered and loved the world he was in. He wasn't going to high school... he was going to wizard school. I'd trade high school with vampires for wizard school with magic without a second thought.

I was reading the first book right after Eclipse was released. It wasn't until Breaking Dawn was released that I even considered the series again. And this time, it was to read if it was really quite as WTFish that my friends claimed it was turning out to be. The same friends who tried to get me to read it were now agreeing with my original opinion and then adding "well you didn't even get to the part where the vampire's sparkle."

So I read Twilight. Which despite a few bits that were hard to swallow, went rather quickly.

New Moon was tougher. There were points where I was so furious at Bella's blatant insanity and everyone's inability to see it- that it took several sessions of reading aloud to my dogs with funny voices and pantomiming to muscle through it.

Eclipse was near impossible. It spent months gathering dust on the coffee table as I struggled to leaf through the pages. Every time she even mentioned college, I got so pissed that I had a hard time resisting the urge to chuck the book in the trash. Her indifference at graduating High School (something I was so excited for). Her selfish desire to keep Edward out of the battle so that he might survive even if at the expense of others. Don't even get me started on how they left those tourists to die at the hands of the Volturi in New Moon.

But I'm not saying college is so important that everyone MUST go. But I was so happy to get the opportunity- so grateful that I was accepted, that my parents could afford it, that I could fulfill my dream of getting a degree from a university (yes, I dreamed. I'm a nerd and proud of it.) For Bella to get accepted into Dartmouth and then to not want to go... is just disgusting to me. It wasn't even that she couldn't afford it. She practically got a free ride, never mind how dishonest it was. Most kids would kill to be in her position.

But then she decides not to go. Bella Swan (excuse me) Bella Cullen is too good for college. She'd rather give birth to a Satanic spawn (which really doesn't take her very long to do, I don't understand why she doesn't go to college afterwards and leave the demon baby with the grandparents). But that's not until Breaking Dawn of course. The book I'm reading now.

I'm on chapter three. After about two months or so. Not because I don't have time to read, but I don't have the patience. I read chapter one two months ago- two and three last night. Only Dan Bergstein's blogs help me get through them. I'm not allowed to read Dan's work until I get through the chapter he's blogged. Then I can have some hysterics as a reward for having survived the chapter.

But seriously, read Dan's work (community.sparknotes.com, look for blogging twilight) if you haven't already.

Now, you see I've read quite a bit of the book series. I kin the experience to shoving chunks of ice up my nose. Really quite unpleasant. I don't recommend it. If you can avoid reading it, do so. I only read it so that I can better provide a case against it when explaining why it sucks so badly. Honestly it's also a good tool to use when explaining to people how not to write.

But in terms of twilight fan attacks, I've only suffered a few idle insults here and there. Most twilight fans are surprisingly reasonable and often times are quite friendly and easy going. I've found the average fan enjoys the series enough to also see its flaws and poke fun at it too. I post anti-twilight comics, and most of those who watch me for the comics are actual twilight fans. Sometimes it's a hit or miss. Some jokes the fans find amusing, sometimes they don't. But I don't set out making the comics trying to upset fans. Mostly just to make people laugh. So if the fans enjoy the comics too- that's all the better a success for me.

I've been called a butch lesbian for not considering Edward hot (I'll freely admit the actor for Jacob is quite attractive. But I'm not into 17 year old boys. I wasn't into 17 year old boys even when I was 17). I've been accused of being a hatemonger- though I'm not sure how they justified that. And I've even had a rather hateful albeit passionate debate with a diehard fan. I tried to be as cordial as I could. Even when she threw spiteful comments my way, claiming I was ignorant or "not allowed to say anything bad about twilight because you're not published". You know... the usual things twitards use as a defense.

But all of the above occurred online. Mostly on DA. I have never been assaulted by any Twilight fans in real life. It is in this case that I feel that a lot of Anti-fan's exaggerate. Now not all the attacks are fake. Obviously they had to come from some where- some real incident that someone wanted to share. But I think the majority are.

I have run into several real life twitards. Most were aware that I did not like Twilight. I think the worst I ever got were glares and mutterings to their friends. I know a little old lady wearing an Edward shirt gave me a nasty look when I said to my friend- "do think she knows she's a little old for edward?" Granted... I kinda deserved it. But hence the eventual idea of Oboe. Check my comics for further details.

This long winged entry was mostly just me telling my story. I wanted to throw my part since my story is a bit different from most. If you read what I had to say, thanks. If not, well then you wouldn't be reading this sentence now so... I guess it doesn't matter.  Unless you skimmed in which case, I hate you. D:

I agree full-heartedly on this one, my friend. It isn't even scientifically accurate or realistic in any scientific way. Edward is a vampire and therefore dead, and cold. He cannot physically carry semen or get an erection, so how the HELL did Reneesme (Or however you spell it) come to exist? Not to mention that they all have hair, and Edward is in fact very hairy. Hair cannot grow on a human body that is dead, and hair would rot on a dead human body as well after a while, so why doesn't it? On that note, what exactly is it that makes them have such pale skin? If they do not die in the sun, then I'm sure it would be much easier to hide the fact that they're vampires if they were tanned to some extent. And if they are dead bodies, why do they not have any sort of purple or green or blue tint to their skin? Flesh rots after years, and it changes color, so why doesn't it on them? I'm sure that there isn't some sort of magical body wash that just restores skin to natural color (That would have some badass advertisement though)

On the spectrum from Twilight fans to Twilight haters, I'm in the middle camp with all the people who either think it's just okay or simply don't care. I bought the first book out of curiosity and I think the series had potential that was never reached and I think Meyer was trying to do something different with her "vampires" because of the way they are portrayed, though that clearly backfired and they aren't so much vampires as they are golems with vampiric traits.

Lol. I think twilight is okay, the films are a NO-NO, but the books I found... they had quite a good plot line, but the way it was written.... sucked.
But I can TOTALLY understand why you loathe Twilight, especially if you hate Vampires, I mean, its still a book, but the creepy thing is it seems to have become an obsession for some :L

well i don't see what you mean by a good plot line. it lacked a dynamic story arc. maybe a compelling ...romance factor? I noticed that she wrote in such a way that's good at sucking people into a story. i had a hard time liking the story because it involved three of my least favorite things. vampires, high school and sappy romance. so really- i'm pretty bias in my opinion. i know it. i can't take too much sap as it makes me feel embarrassed or grossed out. fluff is okay. but sap... blagh.

i like it better when two characters are too stubborn to admit they like each other. that's cuter in my opinion.

I always called my mom and dad by their real names. I grew up listening t them calling themselves by their names, so I figured that was how it was supposed to be. And when I got into school, I thought it was stupid and disrespectful to call them by anything but their real names. In retrospect, I was smoopid kid, you know brain smart, not socially. I mean, adults called eachother by their names, why shouldent I. To this day when I meet someone with my family, they ask "You call your mom and dad by their real names?" And I have to explain why. I swear I should get a fake tattoo made that says "Yes, I call my parent by their real names." I could have it reapplied before going out into public and It would be like "Why do yo..." *i show them the tattoo* "Oh..." Why am I talking?

well if they want you to call them by their real names, I don't seen any problem with it. it's only bella, who addresses her dad by his name behind his back- but calls him dad to his face, that bothered me. seemed really disrespectful.

I always thought Bella called her parents by their first names because she wasn't really close to her dad and her relationship with her mom was more "buddies" than mother-daughter; That's the impression I got anyway.

OneWingedMuse In reply to Audio-Redux [2012-05-09 04:55:08 +0000 UTC]

see... i'd be okay with that, if she called her dad "charlie" to his face. but she doesn't. she knows he doesn't want her to call him that. so instead she refers him as charlie to her friends, behind her father's back. to me, that seems disrespectful.

but i might just be old fashioned. i never call my parents by their first names... unless i'm trying to get their attention from across a crowded room.

As far as I know you're not being old fashioned, most people I've seen still call their parents mom/dad.
I don't think she's deliberately being disrespectful when she does that; To me it just seems more habitual than anything else.

to be honest, i loved the first twilight film when i saw it and i adored the twilight books but over the last few years i have read numourus other things that do the whole teen romance/horror (though I'm not sure Twilight can really be counted as horror)/fantasy genre a lot more justice than twilight.
and i agree with you about the whole calling you parents mum and dad thing. calling them by there names is just odd.

*Deep breath* my Twlight story is much shorter, so, here goes!
I read the first two books and wanted to burn them. For reference on exactly why this is shocking, my teachers in Middle/High School couldn't even make me annotate boooks becuase I felt it was too much like defacing litierary treasure (even with ones it didn't like much such as As I Lay Dying). But I wanted to burn Twilight.
In my group of friends, there were 3 people who read the series all the way trhough, 2 girls and a boy (the boy becuase he is they type of pwerson who must know how things end firsthand). One girl loved it, but didn't talk about it becuase she was (rightly) sure we'd hate it. The boy begged for brain bleach and gave those of us who could take it thw squicky deatails. The third, a sophmore girl, was almost catatonic for a few days becuase the sex/birth scenes had traumatized her.
We were all 'death to Twilight' after that-the one fan just ignored that part of the discussions and/or switched the topic to one everyone liked. In short, the books should not be so popular, and I think they're really only so popular becuase HP was ending and and people were looking for the best big thing and were like "OMG! Thta book is almost as thick and Goblet of Fire! It must be the next HP! Hype it!" I'm nintey percent sure that's that happened.

Think that's bad? Here's some of my life:
1. My mom wanted our family to spend more time together, so she made us watch THE ENTIRE DAMN SERIES. Now she's telling me that I'd have a girlfriend if I was more like Edward. Orly? Should I put on some facepaint and start stalking some bipolar slut with a worse case of Asperger's than my own?
2. Second, I go to church. I'm in the choir. Recently, before I was supposed to go up, I was in the back writing an essay on modern-day fiction. I was working on a paragraph on why Twilight wasn't very good. This crazy chick sitting next to me looks over my shoulder, slaps me, knocks my laptop on the floor, and screams so that everyone getting ready for Mass could hear: "EDWARD CULLEN IS GOD! DON'T YOU DARE MAKE FUN OF HIM!" Because the priest was her father and she was a daddy's girl and a liar, I was kicked off the choir, my Dad almost kicked my ass, and I'm saving up for a new laptop.

In this society, Edward Cullen would be viewed asan abusive boyfrend, and the state would likely file a restraining order seperating him from Bella. Bella herself would be diagnosed with Narccisistic (sp?) Personality Disorder, possibly Asperger's Syndrome and/or some other form of autism.
Pattison, I actually pity him. All he was was some newbie actor trying to get himself a name and some ass. Now, preteen girls and 40- to 65-year-old women stalk him, chase him, assault him, and ask the most absurd things from him. AHe is a victim, though despite this, we all know how he'll be remembered.

On the girls are supposed to like romance part... something annoying happens to me very often. I have no taste for romance, and refuse to read it unless it's a well written one on the side of an excellent plot. Because of this, girls automatically assume that I hate love. I will never understand people.

Anyway, I'm with you. I read Twilight (to see what the hype was about) and Midnight Sun (because sometimes the guy's point of view is a little easier to read). Like you, I was pretty bored throughout the first pages, until Bella attempted to describe herself, and then I lost it.

What turned me off truly wasn't that I couldn't relate to her (I probably could on several aspects), but rather the obvious wish fulfillment. She claims to be utterly plain, yet everyone finds her attractive. She claims to be uncool and a bookworm, but she's instantly popular. She's nothing special, yet she wins the heart of the man that no other girl could even capture the interest of. Not to mention the blatant sexism and obnoxious female fantasy ("He's attractive and rich, because both are the most important things to have!")

Midnight Sun unfortunately just made the romance look even worse; Edward wasn't given an introduction beyond when Bella arrived at his school, and it seems the only reason he even "fell" for her was because his future-seeing sister suggested it. le sigh. Stephanie Meyer unfortunately lives in the world where men and women cannot fathom the idea of their thoughts straying from their lover for even a second.

Anyway, I only read those two. I don't plan on reading the others. And I hope I never have to.

Also, nothing but love for the smart Twilight fans. But of my best buddies loves Twilight, and even when he defends it it's not like he considers it perfect. Thankfully.

i'm a girl. I hate twilight too, Edward (the actor) is not hot, but the Jacob guy is okay. SM writes at a 4th grade level- it has been proven. Why on earth would vampires sparkle ? 12 year olds read this. How inappropriate. I Remember and loved both Pokemon and LoTR. Men who are perpetually in high school would frighten me. He isn't dark, Edward is just a pretty boy. Pretty boys are totally fake. period. Thank you for sharing your story.

the second book isn't so bad, but the last book.....totally sucks. i think it'd be better if the final book split into two books instead, so the plot and characters can develop better. not to mention Collins copied other people's ideas so obviously. Save for Twilight, i can hardly think of any other hyped series which is so very disappointing.

i'd want very much to read your critique! and i myself had done writing 4 parts review of the entire series.XD

i am so glad i found someone who agrees with me! most people think i'm crazy for hating mockingjay with a fiery passion.

omg i shall certainly have to see these reviews! after i have finished mine i shall certainly come check yours out. your mockingjay review is even in two parts! haha. i'm still trying to complete my review of catching fire. mockingjay is daunting... i have too many things to gripe about with it. i was so intensely disappointed.

in my review, some of my points aren't so good. But we're not alone!!! many people had already expressed their disappointment in amazon.com.

i dislike Mockingjay mostly becoz it could have been so much more if the plot and ideas are more skillfully used; and goodness, that book is an insult to the readers, and most of the plots go against everything I'd ever known about human nature, war and revolution.

it's bad that Collins wants to lecture us about war, revolution and the evilness of politicians; instead of simply and faithfully tells a story.

I'll stay put for your reviews, do remember sending me the links!

the twilight fan base has become like the Justin Beaver fan base (which we can all thank Usher for). It was good when it didn't have the mad hatter following, I agree OneWindedMuse. it's kind of what happened with Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, Hollywood went balistic for that, the guy in the books is like a broading Gena Showalter male character with a few downsides. I think if they didn't make it into a movie it would have been better.

Makes sense. :3 I read Twilight before it was popular, when I was in middle school. I thought it was alright, but not very interesting or well-written. You know, Harry Potter was so much better. But then it became popular, and I read more books, and I realized how god awful it was.

For me, it's really more of a "this doesn't deserve to be so popular with a huge franchise and movies and stuff" sort of thing.

Kind of helps the books just get stupider XD

i had a friend who got into it around the same time. she was the reason i picked up the book in the first place. she doesn't read very much so i was intrigued to see what kind of book would actually interest her.

i initially wrote it off that i had simply read more books than she had and that a book like that wouldn't interest me- as i've seen it done before. but then when she confessed to me that she wasn't going to buy breaking dawn because she was afraid that it was going south fast- i decided to look into it again. and that's when i started to realize just how bad it got.

iunno if i had read the book without knowing what was going to happen... if that would have helped me get sucked into it. if i would have thought edward and bella as a healthy relationship. i like to think that i wouldn't but i don't know- simply because i found the beginning of the book dull and put it down. but who knows. i might have been just like my friend... slowly realizing how horrible it was getting.

i know that i never would have condoned the imprinting. that just goes against absolutely everything in my moral being. good god, i don't know how people can think that's okay. even between emily and sam it's disgusting. gah.

Yeah, same. My friend read it before me, and she reads probably as much as I do. She loved the books for a while, but slowly realized that they weren't as good as she revered them to be.

The first time around, especially if you're a young teenage girl, you do sort of get into it. Especially since it was still rather obscure when I first read it, and back then I wasn't so... picky about my books. But it really did go downhill. It may be a good enough book for middle schoolers, who probably don't realize that the whole James thing at the end could have been easily avoided, but not for anyone older.

The imprinting... that was weird. I mean, it's interesting to see the guys having no choice in who they love, but when they imprint on babies, it gets creepy. It's also called child grooming o.o

She addressed her parents by first name (but only behind their back).
totally agree with you on that.

iunno, maybe it's just my generation. my cousins have addressed their parents by first name in front of me and it shocked me. well not only that but they were being incredibly disrespectful and talking back. but even if they weren't talking back, i just find addressing parents by first name basis is disrespectful unless the parents request it. like in the case of step parents. sometimes they just aren't comfortable with "mom" or "dad". I had a great grandmother who refused to let us call her grandma and instead demanded to be addressed by her first name.

but just that she did it in her thoughts. like she would call them mom and dad to their faces... but then turn around and snidely address them by their first names... it just seems incredibly rude to me...

maybe i'm just too old. i don't understand teenagers anymore.

i don't think i understood teenagers when i was a teenager though...

to me it's more like a culture difference, in my country we're expected to call our parents mom and dad and nothing else.

but just that she did it in her thoughts. like she would call them mom and dad to their faces...

But i still know some parents are okay with their kids calling them by first name basis. Still just as you had mentioned, the way that Bella called her parents by their names BEHIND THEIR BACKS looks really disrespectful.
Plus Bella just keeps looking down at her mother, for no good reason! And she shows her dad barely any respect. That's even more disrespectful!

if i lived with my dad, he surely won't put up with half of the shit Bella had put his dad through.>_<

Plus Bella's mom, what had she done wrong with her daugther to deserve this? that woman spent years raising her daugther, clothed and fed her and she got looked down at in return!?
