Description Totodile!

I didn't forget about this project no.

Because I spent some extra time on this I think it deserves to be posted separately, the same's gonna be applied to future pieces too.

This is my first time painting an underwater scene so I probably made a lot of mistakes. Critiques are appreciated!

I love the atmosphere. Everyone always picks cyndaquil as their starter for Johto, but secretly I always loved Totodile more

This scene reminds me of Ariel's grotto from The Little Mermaid. I love the pose and the inclusion of the Heart Scale among the corals. To add a little critique about the lighting following what the above users have already mentioned, I think the overall tones could have been a little darker to convey a sense of depth. The highlights on the corals seem a little too bright for the depth that I imagine Totodile is at, unless it's swimming in extremely clear water. If it is swimming in clear water, then I'd imagine that the some of the highlights formed by water ripples can be seen even on the sea bed.

The second critique is a little more petty and concerns Totodile's anatomy. It would have been more true to the original design if its back was more rounded rather than flat and at an angle to its sides. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Totodile has 3 ridges along its back, with the centre ridge being the largest. Lastly, the ridge along its back looks a little off centre. That said, this is more petty critique as it's up to your interpretation on how Totodile should look like. I really love this pic and the story it tells

Hey thanks for the input! I agree that the colors are pretty saturated and bright for an underwater scene. I was too focused on making them look nice and pretty and didn't consider the atmosphere aspect of the picture haha. I'll try to pay more attention next time.

Your second critique about the anatomy is also true. I didn't really use a ref when I drew him so it was bound to come out as a bit off. I like to keep the design as close as the original so thank you very much for pointing that out!

oh screw my other comment let me show some examples...
probably something like [link] or [link] ? It makes the reflected light looks watery (im sorry for the bad explanation)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

onemegawatt In reply to klendusic [2012-08-16 02:47:34 +0000 UTC]

Ohhh I get what you mean but in those examples the subjects are very close to the water surface, while in mine the totodile is pretty deep underwater so there won't be much reflection. I didn't bother adding too much details to it either because it's 'far away' from the viewer.

Thanks for the suggestions though, I'll keep them in mind when trying to do something similar!

It looks super for your first underwater painting! Tbh I'd like to critique but my use of english is limited when it comes to these things (I wanted to talk about the water ripples' reflection/lighting thing but im not sure how to explain ;__; )
anyway I can see that you are improving with each picture you submit

Underwater scenes can be pretty annoying, but I think you pulled this one off spectacularly. Great work, looks awesome!

onemegawatt In reply to ChrisMoschler [2012-08-16 01:31:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanks man and haha true true, one of the things I find the most annoying is the lighting it's different than normal scenery.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ChrisMoschler In reply to onemegawatt [2012-08-16 06:19:10 +0000 UTC]

Yeah for sure. I'm still trying to figure out how to cast reflections from light hitting ripples on the water's surface onto a subject and have it look half decent haha. Something I can't seem to get the hang of.
