Thank you. What could be improved on the lower part of the body? ;3

wonderful job on this dragon. I love the color schemes on it and the way the color tones blend so well together. I do have to ask though, what is khokhloma? is it a laminate metal like Damascus or Mokumegane, or is it a type of alloy like orichalcem? is it a type of patina you can put on precious metals?

Khokhloma is a type of traditional Russian folk art; lacquer on wood, usually, with black-and gold/red color scheme. The type of motifs/lines it uses has been an inspiration to me for the past year or two.
I'm afraid the color scheme in this one isn't quite up to par with the style. XD

aah, so basically it's metallic leafing over laquered woods or ceramics. *nods* I see. I'll definately have to check up on that. thanks for the heads up and the explination. have you ever tried to draw a lamanant raremetal dragon though, just out of curiosity?

sorry. I pulled a brain fart earlier when I was spelling the word "laminate". Anyways though, my answer to your question is this: basically put, when I say the term laminate I'm referencing a style of forging /metal working technique that is used in producing types of metal akin to Damascus Steel, Katana steel and mokumegane (roughly translated: wood grain metal). Blacksmiths, jewelers and metal workers refer to this style of metal work as a laminate due to the fact that you have to create multiple layers from different metals or homogenous metals, then forge them together and craft them into different parts of a sword or pieces of jewelery. for more information, I suggest looking up the following on Wikipedia or in various metalurgical texts:
Mokumegane (wood grain metal made from multiple types of precious metals forge welded together.)
Tamahagane (trans: heart steel, made from ironsand and used to forge katana blades.)
Woots Steel/ Crucible Steel (otherwise known as Damascus steel or pattern steel.)

Yup, I'm familiar with mokumegane.. Had a workshop on it during undergrad. (Ironically to the topic at hand, my formal training's in whitesmithing).
Nope, never tried that on a dragon...Would this be a request? o.O
*Kicks her project list*. So much for promising self to stop adding new projects to the to-do list...

Sweet, finally I get to talk to someone about the topics of Blacksmithing, whitesmithing and various other forms of metal work on FA. you have no idea how awesome this is to me! as for the request, if at all possible I'd say let's address that issue later on down the road so that you can finish up your project list. if you want though, after you finish up the remainder of your projects we can do an art trade of Dragon art. I'll even try my hand at drawing some of my specialties: construct dragons. sound like a deal?

Har, hope you aren't expecting much on those topics. It's been years since I've done anything more than a little roman chain making/chasing. What experience have you on this subject?
Finishing to-do list may just be wistful thinking. There.. will always be more. Always.
It's a deal, anyway. XD

in the areas of jewelerycraft and whitesmithing, I've done the basics for the course I was in. I've crafted bracelets and rings on mandrils, made a box, forged a brass letter opener, and learned the basics of making bezzier (<-sp?) mountings for cabochon pendants as well as make chain links/ jump rings in a mandrill. I also learned how to pointilize on pieces of jewelery, stamp jewelery, and I learned the bare basics of cuttlebone casting. through going through clocksmithing, I learned how to fabricate multiple parts out of brass, refine my filing, soldering and sawing techneques more, and learned how to work a brass lathe. I'm also thinking of taking a silversmithing class as well, but I'd need to check my funds for that just to be on the safe side.
in any case, that's my brick of text answer to your question. as for the art trade, I'll try getting the black and white image drawn up sometime soon after things calm down over here on my end. just wondering though, what type of constructs do you prefer? clockwork, robotics, midevil style armor plates?

Sounds like that was one heck of a course!! I've never learned to use a lathe, though we had one in the studio... One lost opportunity, that. The rest of the stuff 'm familiar with. (Add electroplating, chasing and reposse (sp? laugh), roman chain making (from scratch; fusing fine silver), and tool-smithing. Oh, and centrifugal casting/using hydraulic press. Where'd you learn your stuff, and, more importantly, can you upload pics? There isn't nearly enough metalwork in DA!
As for things for the trade.. how about a Thief of Data? That'd be robotics-style, I s'ppose. Also, care to give further details on what you want?

It's inspired by persian rugs and traditional Russian folk art, both of which are way more great -and- way more unique!
Thanks. ;3
