Well, personally, I love the first one; the way Holmes is slyly cutting his eyes at Watson, who is properly astounded at Holmes's show of strength. In the second one, I love the way Holmes has his hand on the back of Watson's chair and his nonchalant pose. As someone else said, very catlike. The third one is just plain wonderful. I'm glad Holmes can still get his knees to bend that well - mine sure won't do that any longer!

That he is! One of the lovely things about these characters is that you can draw them at such different times in their lives (and ship them, too). I've always thought your retirement pictures were especially lovely, and I want to draw more in that time frame, too.
Glad you like it, thank you!

Thank you! I had fun drawing them, although the colors were a bit of an afterthought (I had been sitting on the line drawings so long and wanted to finish them quick so I could post them).

Oh my dear heavens, this is so very lovely and beautiful I don't even know where to begin.
First of all, I am amazed and of course very happy that my prompt inspired you to draw even three pictures.... I didn't see this coming at all! So here, a first thank you for that!
Oh, what a fabulous idea to do a little voyage through the years and show how their relationship and Holmes' manner changed! I have to agree that he would get more straightforward in expressing his affection as time passes and you showed this perfectly, but what also strikes me is how his actions become less 'crude', but more and more tender and mature... in the first picture, he is full of the foolish overconfidence of youth which believes to become attractive by showing-off (and he sure likes to do this).. in the second, he has adopted a behaviour of simply being there, circling Watson inconspicuously like a cat, prompting attention (but most probably without being able to restrain himself from some teasing comment as to Watson's taste in literature).. until he finally brings himself to open up a bit more and witnesses the importance of the saying 'Little presents keep a friendship alive'.... Needless to say I love the last drawing most. Holmes giving Watson a piece of fresh honeycomb is so plainly sweet and meaningful, a very simple act that among other things confirms Watson to be a constant, essential part of Holmes' live with whom he shares his achievements... which is now successful beekeeping. Ah, those two. ♥ And you, you are utterly brilliant for expressing such a deep, extensive story of these two people in three pictures. Kudos. Bravura.
Now about something that of course appeals to me as a fashion- and detail-freak... That accuracy of the clothes. I rejoiced at seeing that you gave Holmes a belt instead of suspenders because it creates a nice hint to the fact this scene happens around the 1920s (roughly) as opposed to the other two that still take place at the end of the 19th century. And then the colours. Green like exuberant youth in the first pic, and then it get's more yellowish until we observe the last scene in the sepia of the peaceful composedness of old age. And now, I finally must say how much I like your style. It is so unique, detailed and realistic in an own special way that reminds me a lot of old-fashioned illustrations. Delightful!
I hope I have not forgotten anything, ah yes, maybe I should also write down my inner reaction when seeing this, to illustrate my enthusiasm und joy better. Ahem -- *high-pitched voice*:
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!
It is so really absolutely magnificent and meaningful!
You exceeded all my expectations, A VERY BIG BIG THANK YOU, MERCI BEAUCOUP and DANK JE WEL!!!!!!!!

I'm really pleased you liked this! I started out drawing just the first picture, after thinking about which canon moment could be interpreted as flirting (and I think there are quite a few!), and decided that showoff!Holmes fit the bill, but then I thought I should add some more scenes to fill in Holmes' flirting technique, as it were. And I've been wanting to draw them retired and domestic in Sussex for a while, now - there's never enough art and fic of that!
I like your comparison of Holmes to a cat in the middle picture - makes sense when he lounges around conspicuously waiting to be noticed, and Watson's used to that kind of behavior . And in the last picture, I wanted Watson to be a little wry - in all the pictures (and so much of canon), he's the one reacting, not acting - so at least I can show that his reactions change over time. Maybe Holmes has done something annoying and is trying to apologize with the honeycomb, and Watson doesn't have to put up with it if he doesn't want to. Well, now I want to draw more annoyed Watson.
For the third picture, I looked around a bit for shoes one would wear in the country in the 20s, but didn't come up with much - the belt was definitely a nod to changing fashion; not that men's fashions changed very much between the 1880s and 1920s. I figured Watson was wearing an old shirt, so I wouldn't have to update it.
Thank you so much for the lovely comment. I've reread it several times and it always makes me smile. You're very welcome, de rien, graag gedan und nichts zu danken!
