Hi,

I studied art (painting, drawing, history) starting at about 7 or 8 years old. But, I was a fine arts/art history major in college. And trained as a docent at Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

wow, no wonder you're good: lots of practice.
what is a docent if you don't mind my asking? i never heard that word before.

your paintings are very... human. i like the way you convey emotions

A docent is a person who is specially trained to give guided tours through a museum or an art gallery.

The training is given by the museum and the works which the museum has on hand, but it's more than that, it's comprehensive art history training as well...at least as comprehensive as the collection the museum holds. Santa Barbara had quite a bit considering it's size and the size of the town itself...I was very fortunate.

Thank you. I do try!

altair-creed In reply to OMangueOTangue [2008-07-14 16:45:52 +0000 UTC]

could you use that training at another museum as well?
i guess what i am trying to say is: is it transferable?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OMangueOTangue In reply to altair-creed [2008-07-14 17:18:23 +0000 UTC]

Nearly every museum has their own training specifically made for the works housed there. Having previous docent experience would likely help facilitate the training but I do not think it's tranferable.

is the santa barbara museum big?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OMangueOTangue In reply to altair-creed [2008-07-14 18:47:02 +0000 UTC]

It's small relative to large city museums but it is ranked in the top 10 of US regional museums.

so does a docent give tours on particular collections that they're interested in or the whole museum? and how many tours during the day? i imagine it is thirsty work talking

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OMangueOTangue In reply to altair-creed [2008-07-14 19:20:15 +0000 UTC]

There are general tours and specific tours. Should a new exhibit open then docents will be trained to include the new pieces.

There are:
Focus tours which concentrate on a specific (or new) exhibition.
Theme tours which follow a common thread or a particular idea in the permanent collection.
Then the general or highlight tour which...well, highlights the museum's permanent collection.
Each docent has the opportunity to change which pieces they'd like to highlight (not all museums do this) during any given tour.

There are quite a few docents so it isn't an all day everyday thing. It's generally midday for perhaps up to an hour or so...sometimes less.

With the exception of the docents who are retirees most of the docents have regular jobs...since this is a non-paying "position".

retirees do it for fun? i guess it is like volunteering -- for the experience of it

so how do you earn a living then?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OMangueOTangue In reply to altair-creed [2008-07-14 20:20:55 +0000 UTC]

Most people do it for fun and yes, for the experience. It just keeps the brain in motion.

I'm a full time artist.

Yes, commissions, freelance work, contract work (Topps/Lucasfilm, etc., etc.), and my regular work (fine art and pets).

99% of what I have here on DeviantART is paid work.

I try to be on the very cusp of realism. I consider myself a realist but not to the very fullest extent. I do like to offer a very slightly skewed realism.
Thanks!

OMangueOTangue In reply to tdastick [2009-08-08 00:42:01 +0000 UTC]

I know this was a while back...but, I always do want my backgrounds to have a little something, even if it's just a good color combo. Doesn't always turn out as such but we all keep trying, right?

Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tdastick In reply to OMangueOTangue [2009-08-10 17:19:47 +0000 UTC]

I tend to crap out when it comes to backgrounds. Part of it is just laziness , but I do it mainly to help the main subject stand out. The less involved the background is, the more interesting the foreground becomes.

But then I see stuff by guys like NAR and Danny Kuang who put tons of detail in every square inch and it looks spectacular!
