Description Why am I enjoying this so much when I need to be working on ten thousand other things that are NOT THIS mad expedition into how geeky my love of places in Britain is? I don't even have a good REASON to like the U.K really- I mean, we're in a recession, it's rainy, polluted, grimy, you get stabbed and shot and generally blown up everywhere you go, we're ignorant, unemployed, asthmatic, ungrateful, unfit buggers, and somehow I still love the place! What?! Guh. Oh well, here goes brief summary schpiel time again;

Manchester: Occassionally nicknamed the Capital of the North, Manchester has been a city since Roman collonisation, the name originally coming from the Roman fort's name 'Mamucium' or 'Mancunium', but it became a fully fledged city during the textile manufacturing boom of the Industrial Revolution. Manchester can indeed claim to have been a significant power in overturning the slave trade (which is a big story, which may require another comic later), is the home of Manchester United which has the biggest global support of any football club in the world, and has too many musical, artistic and scientific cultural influences for me to fit in under another thousand words (seriously, not just pimping, doing a bit of research on top of what I already know it's ridiculous how much stuff this place has done). Manchester himself is something of a peace maker, although he has something of a way 'without' words, and other than occassionally accidentally raining on other regions he is liked by most of the others, with the possible exception of London who is a little suspicious of his status...

Liverpool: Needless to say Liverpool is hugely famous for producing the legendary musical group The Beatles, but as a city has always held high regard as a very productive port, although similar to Bristol it was unfortunately heavily involved with the slave trade, leading to a still present slight bitterness towards Manchester, who cost the city much employment and profit. Culturally Liverpool has many musical successes, leading to the term 'Merseybeat', and has also produced many notable authors and poets such as Charles Dickens and Roger McGough. A heavily culturally influencial guy, Liverpool is often at odds with Bristol with their rivalry in artistic spheres increasing after he gained the title of Europian Capital of Culture in '08, and although still slightly resentful Liverpool is very much like a brother to Manchester, albiet a spikey tempered and occassionally sour one.

Cardiff: Cardiff is the largest city and capital of Wales, a country that is independant of England but part of Great Britain. Cardiff is the base for many national cultural and sporting institutions, the Welsh national media, and the seat of the National Assembly for Wales. Cardiff also houses a grand opera theatre and has produced many fine singers, and in the Doctor Who spin-off televeision series it is the location of the base of the Torchwood team. Wales and England have continously been at war on and off for hundreds of year, but in the present times of peace there is generally very little rivalry or dissonance, and Cardiff in particular is a very diplomatic and accepting city- Cardiff is thus a gentle, friendly and eager guy, who is sometimes a little too easy to please but can assert his own independance when needed (especially against Swansea...) as well as having a rather good singing voice.

Gwynedd: Located in North-West Wales this county is one of the largest in Wales but also one of the most sparsley populated, the majority of which speaks Welsh, the native language of the country which is a varient of Celtic. Home of the Snowdonia National Park it is a very lush, green land with much natural attraction and a soothing, tranquil atmosphere, but is notoriously tricky to navigate by road. Also famous for vocalists it is the birthplace of soul singer and writer 'Duffy' and the opera singer Bryn Terfel. Largely a calm and collected girl, Gwynedd is rather quiet and mellow, but what she does say is really only understood by people from her own country, which can occassionally lead to frustation at and dismisal of foreign counties.

Newport: Despite his appearance Newport is a very old establishment, the port having been initiated as early as the Bronze age by native fishermen. Located about the river Usk (which has the second largest tidal change of any river in the world), the settlement was a responisble for the transport of large amounts of coal during the Industrial Revolution, it was the leading coal port in Wales for a great amount of time and was in fact larger than Cardiff until 1850. In modern times Newport still has broad economic coverage, but has become a little 'average' in appearance and is a little suscept to the influences of the youth movement, with a sadly increasing crime rate and influx of 'chav' culture. A bit of a moper and often a little too eager to cause trouble, Newport has all the potential to return to his previous distinction but has something of a reversed aging process at the moment, having lost some years of maturity in recent times (he's okay really though, just don't visit him after eight o'clock if you don't want him to mug you).

Scrawling up part 2 far too quickly in between going mad doing my disseration and the comic and work for next year's film and a commission that I STILL haven't finished because I'm rubbish and GAH.

This is brilliant. I really Love this.

Just a couple of things I've noticed about the Welsh "people" in this. If it sounds like I'm trying to knock your strip, that's honestly not my intention....

* Where you've had Gwynedd saying "pleased to meet you", you've actually put it twice....Both "Mae'n dda gen i gwrdd a chi" and "Neis cwrdd a chi" mean "Pleased to meet you", so you only really needed one of them.

* I think someone from Gwynedd is much more likely to say "Sut ydych chi?" than "Shw Mae?". I've never heard of the phrase "Shw Mae?" at all TBH, and I'm from Gwynedd originally.

As I said, I'm not knocking your work, and I look forward to seeing more of these.

OH MY GOD YOU KNOW WELSH YOU ARE MY SAVIOUR, tahnk goodness! I haven't been able to find anyone who speaks any so I had no idea if these were right (which they obviously aren't!), I was just using sources I'd found online, so now I can go and fix them! If it's not too much trouble, if I have any more phrases I need to be translated could I please ask you to help me? It would be incredibley useful and save me a lot of potential embarrassment!

Tony--Jay In reply to Tony--Jay [2009-08-23 20:03:42 +0000 UTC]

Just looked up "Shw Mae?" and it's actually South Welsh, and not North Welsh....They're not different on the whole, but there can be some words or phrases that are completely different....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

olafpriol In reply to Tony--Jay [2009-08-23 21:08:23 +0000 UTC]

Fixed the greeting, but because this is a scanned in image I can't really do anything about the Shw Mae >.< oops, sorry!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tony--Jay In reply to olafpriol [2009-08-24 08:57:26 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry about it...
TBH, "Shw mae?" works much better with Liverpool saying "Bless You", than "Sut ydych chi?" would have, since to someone not familiar with Welsh it probably would have sounded something like a sneeze...

Poor Manchester, he didn't even do anything. And the rain made him all the more adorable. I think you just made me love him most, though Liverpool was awesome too. (Newport just staring was great.)

And don't feel bad for loving a place that's "in a recession, it's rainy, polluted, grimy, you get stabbed and shot and generally blown up everywhere you go, we're ignorant, unemployed, asthmatic, ungrateful, unfit buggers" cause you just described my own beloved country too! (I'm asthmatic myself.) For all its faults, we can always find the fun in it.
