Description fIRe - Innovative Infrared:iconinfrared-club::iconinfrared-club::iconinfrared-club::iconinfrared-club::iconinfrared-club:
The advent of digital photography and the rise of powerful digital editing techniques has allowed infrared photography (IR photography) to move on from the traditional film based images that relied on the Woods Effect ("white" foliage) and the lack of scattering of IR light ("black" skies and long distance clarity). The relatively simple software processing of channel swapping, while still a useful technique, is giving way to more innovative techniques such as colour renditions, and highly structured contrast images. Infrared photographers recognise that there are no limits on how to interpret and develop images captured by sensors sensitive to IR light. Here are five innovative images that all come from basic IR captures taken with my converted Canon 40D camera. The principal software used for development was the Google/Nik suite, particularly Silver Efex Pro 2. The purpose of these images

The impact is in the dark and not the light , one of your best - I love it .

I really like the composition, and the drama of the B&W effect. Nice!

Thank you, Lyn. The idea is there but I couldn't get the horizontals and verticals to be true. I may re-work it.

Cheers

David, Recognizing of course that it's your photo, your vision - Β This viewer sees many perfect verticals on the right side, which anchor the horizon line. Yes, the horizon isn't truly horizontal, but that bit of variation from true makes it interesting to me. And the line of the fence and walkway forms an effective transition between the non-horizontal horizon and the vertical lines on the right. Also, there's effective dynamic balance between the sky and the bottom part of the composition.

Some good thoughts there, Lyn. There are balances and contrasts and these are "deliberate" in the sense that I saw them, but whether they would work is a different matter. Lots of what I saw in this was to do with contrasts in geometry - zig-zags vs verticals vs horizontals, vs curves. So, the slight horizontal aberration irks me!!

Many Thanks

Is it day?Β  Seems like too much light on the face of the buildings and the walkway for it to be night; but I'm probably wrong.

The Exif data tells me that it was shot 6.40 and 23 seconds AM, Linda! Yes, morning it is, and you're quite correct about the light. This is a small conceit on my part as it is an allusion to the old way that night scenes were shot in films by in fact shooting them in daytime with special filters. Unfortunately, you could always tell because people had shadows!

Many Thanks

David
