Description Sitta europaea

Hidden GemsAfter only 1 year, I have managed to investigate and to get working one of the major features of my Canon EOS M5 mirrorless camera: the WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities such that the camera can be linked wirelessly to my smart phone, in this case a Samsung S8. I had tried this when I first bought the camera, but got hopeless lost trying to set it up. Now, with more determination, I have managed it. The upshot is that I can remotely control and fire the M5 from the smart phone. Given that WiFi and Bluetooth communications cam take place over 10s of meters, I need not be any where near the camera in order to operate it. The result is that I can set up the camera near wildlife, go away and be out of sight, yet take shots when something interesting comes into range. Basically, that is how I have been taking the recently posted shots of garden birds and intruders such as those below.

Thank you kindly, Alex. I'll have to branch oout now, if we get some good weather and try Bluetooth in the local Park.

Cheers

Now that's a nice looking birdie!! !  (in this shot he looks like he could be a cross between a hummingbird and a kingfisher ) Related somehow, perhaps? )

I'm not sure of the taxonomy for these birds, but I doubt a close relationship to hummingbirds and kingfishers. But, in one regard you are correct, Linda. Different birds have evolved along different lines over the ages, but that does not mean that different birds cannot have similar behavioral traits, at least in some circumstance. Nuthatches can flutter when approaching a feeding station or when re-perching. So that is a bit like a humming bird. But, they need to be perched before actually feeding, unlike the humming bird. So some behaviour similarities, but not a total match.

I'm not sure this nuthatch has a personal name, Henry, but perhaps Nutty would be appropriate?

Not quite a night capture, Sheri - very early morning with very poor light - so I used flas!

Oh I am a dodo. I see that is was 9am...wow...still dark then?  I didn't realize you stayed so dark this time of year but it makes sense, I am only at the 39th parallel.  You are much higher.

Light was poor then, Sheri, but I set the ISO low to reduce noise and relied on the flash to get a reasonable exposure for the bird. As is often the case with flash, the background appears darker than it really was.
