Description Up NorthWe took a break from work on our new house, Elderslie House, last week and travelled up to more northerly parts of Scotland, the Cairnsgorms, part of the mountainous region known as the Scottish Highlands. As we were with friends most of the time, I had little time for much serious photography, but snapped a few items of interest. The Scottish Highlands are a very old geological region, much worn and rounded by weathering and particularly glaciation. Here is a shot of a characteristic mountain, Craiggowrie, showing the characteristic rounded shape, the exposed rock faces, the little cols, and the grass and heather vegetation. Note also the pine trees on the lower slopes, rising roughing half way up the slopes. There is a distinct tree line on most peaks, the weather being too cold on the higherΒ slopes and summits to allow all but the hardiest of trees. However, my second shot shows one such tree, on another hill, that was damaged at an early age , but that, nevertheless, made it a

Yep. The day we were there was nice and sunny, but that is very misleading as these moors are usually very cold, misty and windy. Unless you are very well attired and knew exactly what you were doing then you would be a goner up here.

You wouldn't want to suffer from agoraphobia up here, Steven. And you are correct in that there is a certain eerie character about it - the wind causes the grass to ripple and shimmer and odd sounds whisper over theΒ  moors - bringing banshees to mind...looking for lost souls.

Cheers

Sounds like a perfect place for me...as for banshees no problem compared to my ex-mother-in-law...lol...

Well now, Steven, that is another explanation of the origin of banshees - former mothers-in-law!
