So I assume you've seen the YT vid compiling all the evidence that Undertale is heavily based on Celtic folklore?Β
You might be interested to know that I plan on making a little side story video with Toriel and Alphys visiting Ireland and/or Scotland (I know conflating them is majorly no-no but I have to do a background check on where exactly this song came from) looking for the mythical creatures that inspired this tuneΒ kristinhall.org/songbook/Campfβ¦
in the hopes of finding surviving monsters. (and Loch Ness possibly, too)Β
Blast it all, the version that I loved on YT has been taken down. I really hope I still have it saved on one of my old phones.Β

Actually no I didn't. I just know from chatting with some of my undertale colleague that Undertale was more likely supposed to happen in England. And that Asgore and Toriel are based on a monster from the viking folklore.Β

A) I know another comment mentioned it, but is her name an homage or a cute little reference to your work on Chara v. Buddy/Interlopers?
B) If you rearrange her name you would get "Uddby", which doesn't reference anything except for a mill in Sweden. Sorry, I just had a lot of fun solving the mystery of the Cad Walder name.
C) But still, there are some clever hidden meanings in this. It couldn't be a coincidence that you should pick brown for her fur colour because the colour brown is symbolic of stability, warmth and friendliness. Considering how she was responsible for maintaining a steadfast peace between the two races, it makes your choice of colour for her fur ABSOLUTELY GENIUS!!!!
I love artists who take the time to consider the finer details!!!!!!!!!!!!

A) Unfortunately, no it isn't a ref to Lisa. And my work for Interlopers has become a bit sour in the end. I still enjoy my parts. But the ending, well I wish I had been told how it ended. And also I wish Jim Sterling was told that as well.Β
B) This time there was no play on word with her name. Buddy was only her working name, still in ref with her "friendly" personality. But I was suppose to change it with a different name later on. I just stick with buddy because I kinda like it.Β
C) However it is true friendship is entirely guiding her design and personality. And even though Buddy may seem to be a modern name, it is actually an old celtic word for "brother" or "bond". But her color was also to contrast with the usual goat monster we are use too in Undetale. I want to show case other design of goat monster that existed in the past. It is an interesting tell in how that people evolve into what Toriel and Asgore look like now.Β Β

Well Undertale has weird name that donβt necessarily have time logic behind it. And Buddy was already use in medieval age. So I though why not.

ha yes indeed. Well Buddy wasn't supposed to be her final name initially. It was just her working name. But I ended up liking it a lot with her, so it just stayed. It was the same with Tyreen's and Koni's name. Initially I was planning on giving them another name but I ended up keeping them.
But the word "Bud" is actually pretty ancient as it was an older version of the word "brother". In general it just means "bond".

I get that the rest of your character sheets have a black background. But, in this case, it makes it really hard to actually see the character

Actually the white is even worse. It make such a contrast that you can't see the detail inside your body. If you study color, you discover that some optical illusion can be created if you put certain color against one another. For instance, while the white background allows you to see her contour clearly, by contrast it also gives the impression the fur is darker and resulting in making impossible to see the details of her body. Which is why I use a black background. And why games design use a grey one.
Also she is no matter what hard to see with that color. That is her unique trait. Reason why she puts those white paint on her fur.
however, aside the artistic choice, it is true, she is darker on my phone screen than what I draw intialy. My temporary tablet has color issues. And what I designed with it was slightly lighter. When Iβll get my big tablette back Iβll adjust it and you.ll be able to see it properly.

I didn't say anything about white. I just said the black made it hard to see. In this case, a neutral gray would be best to show off the character's design. Not another harsh, contrasting color. It's like you said, a pure white background would make her fur seem darker than it was; but, with a pure black background, it made her clothes seem blinding in comparison and still made it hard to see the details. It's worked fine for all your other character sheets since they often had brighter colors, it's just that it didn't work as well this time with a darker, more neutral-toned character.
So you know, there isn't anything in the description that mentions that she's notoriously hard to see, or that her markings were to fix that. At most, there was that part talking about how her clan fights with warpaint on; but, her pose didn't make me think, "She's ready to fight." It's fine, I know now, just letting you know for the future.
Thanks very much for brightening her up. She's got a great design

I know you didn't say anything about white. I was explaining you what I tried, which is why I brought that up. (You know some people can talk about thing without necessarily needing you to bring it up. )
I also try grey and other color by the way. Didn't do her justice either.Β
But once again, all my other characters seem brighter because I am wroking with another tablet at the moment: Right now, I am in a middle of moving. My drawing matierial are in boxes in a truck somewhere between my previous country and the one I am living in now. The tablet I am working with right now has a color setting that is off and can't be fixed, it is a flaw of the engine. So when I drew her, the color I was seeing were entirely different. So this character wasn't to me as hard to see has she appeared to you. After seeing it on another screen, I realized how different the color were (even though knowing the default of my tablet I tried to compensate it but it wasn't enough) and changed it again. It is not that I made a bad choice of color. It is that the tool I am working with is distording what I am drawing. So bear with me and my drawings, until I get back my materials. And finally gives her the color I initially designed without needing to do a adjustement gymanstic between screens.
And for the other part:I didn't expend on her description, because it is not her official presentation. It is jsut a drawing I need to get out of my system with a little explaination to have people understand where she is in the story. The description only talks about what people knows nowadays because her story has been lost. Not what I know about her. If I give her story here what would be the point of discovering it in the comics later. I choose however to share with you that little anecdote about her so you have a better grasp of her design and clothing.
Also I said the Picts (the clan that inspired me her design) were fighters with painted bodies. Not her or her tribe. Picts are real people, and humans. I mentioned them because, Undertale is supposed to be set in what could be northen England and Europe. In her story, Buddy is part of a clan that lives in East of the country from where Athanas lives. Which would be were the Pitcs were established at that period of History. I give that precision because stereotypically people with this design are said to come from further south. Which it is not the case. The description never said she is a fighter.Β
Anyway, yeah it is brighter but the color is still not properly adjusted, because this morning, while checking the design with my job computer, it is still too dark compared to what she is supposed to look like. So annoyingggggggg.Β
