I've always thought the relationship between ana and loid was very sweet, and incredibly sad if you think about it. I mean, they wouldn't be able to visit much after the credits. Youngtown is like, what? You have to walk to Merryville through the woods and take a train to get there. It's probably a harrowing distance, especially as children whom still have growing up to do (and school to get in the way?). Yet, you could probably imagine, someone you spent so much time with- someone who'd heal your wounds with magic and someone who you'd repeatedly watch get frightened, scared, hurt- you can imagine that in that situation, it'd be so easy to break down, cry, comfort the other and exchange small whispers of comfort. And if you don't feel loved between those moments, then you wouldn't understand what love really is.
What I found interesting is you had the choice to say "no" to ana at the dance on Mt. Itoi. Way to be a dick, Ninten.

Same with Ness and Paula. All that emotional tension, and while they live in the next town over, Paula never sincerely admits it. I always thought she might've been afraid to.

And in Mother3, Lucas's obsession with his mother and his brother probably lead him to be very emotionally widthdrawn. Love, as far as he'd probably be concerned, would either save him or lead him further into despair. But the heart breaking thing is, no one seemed to try to love Lucas, not even Kumatora. The three all acted as a tight little group, but there was no one specifically there to act as a lover. Perhaps Itoi ment to do this because of the huge age gap between each character (OK, Kumatora's 16 when Lucas is 9, Duster is probably in his mid 20's throughout the game.. I still think Kumatora/Duster is cute though, simply because their storylines are so interconnected.), or perhaps because Lucas was learning to become stronger instead of weaker and softer. Ever heard of Samson and Delilah? Love doesn't make you do anything, and even when you're the strongest man in the world, the woman would still be able to cut off all your hair. Lucas in general is so emotionally confused- so fucked up that... perhaps he couldn't be capable until he got his revenge on the man who destroyed his life.

...Aw fuck, I did not just spend 4 paragraphs analyzing the relationship between videogame characters. I'M NOT A SHIPPER! I just fucking love the mother games and their sincere and simple storytelling about childhood, from everything between loss and love.
