This is actually a very well composed shot for photography not being your medium. The title of ancient can apply to either the shrine or the trees. Their height really lends context to the subject.

It is... to get there you need to travel by train into the mountains for two hours, up a cable car, then by bus, and finally walk deep into the enormous graveyard, where all is silent.

Love the composition of the photo, but I think it is underexposed taking your eyes up into the trees instead of the building.

I second this.
Exposure is describing how much light enters the camera and affects the film.
Overexposure means that too much light hit the film. The light areas will be much lighter than they should be.
Underexposure means not enough light has hit the film so bright areas will be grey.
Both result in a loss of highlights and good contrast.
You can fix this by dogging and burning in the darkroom or in photoshop.
Or you can work with different shutter speeds when you shoot next time.

How do I avoid pictures being underexposed? (Hang on, overexposed pictures are washed out, so I'm assuming underexposed ones are too dark?)

I think if your camera works like my old one, focus the camera one the dark area, press the button 1/2 way in, then while holding it in 1/2 way pan the camera up and take your photo. That way the camera takes a light reading of the dark area and the building can still be down in the photo for better composition. This panning trick also works if you want the auto focus to be focused on something that is not in the center of the photo. (If that makes any sense). Also take 5 photos of the same thing, each time focusing on a different area in the photo and then panning the camera to what you want the photo to look like.
