It looks like you're doing everything right the same as I'd do it. The only things I'd change would be, for the lightest shades of grey, use the hardest pencil you can find (I use a 4H) and keep it as sharp as possible, and then the texture of the paper won't show through (as much). Also, if you shade in tight little circular motions instead of lines, it'll disguise the pencil strokes. :3
All this is completely optional, of course. A lot of people prefer to see the pencil strokes and the texture of the paper, and it works great with certain images.
^^' I hope that helped. seriously, though, aside from the fact that your style is different (and there is NOTHING wrong with a difference in style. Variety is the spice of life. I draw pretty high contrast pictures) this looks just like how I drew a while ago. So as long as you keep practicing, you'll keep getting better with no problems.
