Description "The unicorn lived in a lilac wood and she lived all alone. She was very old, though she did not know it, and she was no longer the careless color of sea foam, but rather the color of snow falling on a moonlit night. But her eyes were still clear and unwearied, and she still moved like a shadow on the sea."
~The Last Unicorn, Peter S. Beagle

How did you make the unicorn and moon glow? Looks beautiful.

Oh! I colored this in Photoshop, so I was using layers. On a layer below the unicorn, and below the moon, I used a large "soft" brush, with a low opacity, to make a glowy halo coming out from beneath them. I'm glad you like the way it looks!!!

This is absolutely beautiful. I have always loved the movie. Yet, now that I'm older, I love it even more. The animation is so much more beautiful than I remembered and the characters were more touching than I had realised as a kid. (Molly Grue made me cry when she saw the unicorn for the first time.)

I feel the same way! The older I get, the more I appreciate Molly Grue. I love her!!

WhitewolfSnowy In reply to Nyaasu [2015-09-04 00:16:25 +0000 UTC]

The first animated movie to make me cry was Spirited Away. Afterward, only three others have succeeded. They are Spirit: The Stallion of the Cimarron, The Last Unicorn, and An American Tail. However, the latter two are the only two to make me cry every time I watch them. In The Last Unicorn, I cry at the theme song and I cry when Molly Grue says "DAMN YOU! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!". In An American Tail, I cry at the end. I mean, they had the saddest fucking scene in the whole movie just before the happiest and the happiest is so happy that you can't help but cry.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one so effected by Molly Grue yelling at the unicorn!!
The older I get, the sadder that scene becomes...

I haven't seen An American Tale in years, I should definitely watch it again.

WhitewolfSnowy In reply to Nyaasu [2015-12-12 09:38:44 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you definitely should. It's an amazing film. You can forget about the sequels, though. No one really cares about the third and fourth films. The second one is ok. It's just not brilliant and it's not even Don Bluth's film. Only the first one was by Don Bluth. Anyway, check it out. It is probably the biggest cocktease to the emotions. Then, the ending has the saddest scene just before the happiest. It's impossible to not cry.

Such an underrated film this is! I've only seen it once, but i really enjoyed it. People were pushing me to add this movie to my list of 'traumatising' animated movies, but i never understood why, and i still don't really. The red bull perhaps could be the reason, but he wasn't that frightening. I don't know, i probably need to see this movie again.

Great drawing of Amalthea! I love the ominious glow you gave her, she really lightens up the picture!

Nyaasu In reply to NostalgicChills [2014-04-11 04:33:29 +0000 UTC]

I don't know about traumatizing, but I have a friend who refers to the movie as having a very sad feeling to it, which struck her as a child, and never left her quite the same. x3 I find it to have a sad feeling to it, visually, and because of the music and some of the themes, but perhaps since I saw it when I was older, it didn't effect me in the same way as it did her. x3

Thank you very much!! I want to draw more of her, she is so graceful and gorgeous!

NostalgicChills In reply to Nyaasu [2014-04-11 04:48:32 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm...I guess it was kind of sad. Again, i don't remember much of it. But i'm guessing your friend has never seen The Plague Dogs? Or Watership Down? Or Felidae? Or Grave of the Fireflies? Or many Don Bluth films? As a child; i mean.

There are so many other animated movies that i would call more upsetting than this one, because while this one was pretty sombre and dark, it still had a pretty uplifting ending. Unlike some of these other ones. But i do understand how it could leave an impact on a child like that, The Land Before Time messed me up as a child pretty bad!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nyaasu In reply to NostalgicChills [2014-04-11 05:43:51 +0000 UTC]

She has seen sadder movies, but only after that one, if I'm remembering what she's told me right. She's older than I am with better memories of the 80s, and I'm not sure which movies were out first, so I'm not sure which he had exposure to and when, but all the movies you mentioned (except maybe Felidae) are definitely staples in her library.

I think she only saw Grave of the Fireflies later in life, when she got a bootleg of it on DVD before it was released here. At the time, I needed to borrow her DVD player to watch it, since DVDs were relatively new then. x3 But we were in our teens (her in her 20s) by then.

So, Last Unicorn may have been her first sombre movie, it may have been the first of those that was out at the time, but again I'm not sure of dates. x3

I don't think it was the events of the movie that impacted her so much as the atmosphere. There is a very painful feeling to it, I understand what she is saying, though I can't quite describe it in words.
