Now these guys, I do get to snap. We have a well established population in Dumfries and Galloway, and they are slowly expanding their range. Here's one at the Ken Dee Marches Reserve.Β

That's a really nice capture and excellent to hear they are expanding down there. The place I go to see them is usually Tentsmuir forest, there is a hide that gives you an amazing view of them. They can clearly see that you are there but don't seem to mind, I guess food is more important to them. They will hang around for pretty long periods of time so its nice to get the opportunity to put the camera down and just watch them.

Tentsmuir - near St Andrews and Leuchars - long time since I've been there.Β

Good point about the reds nor seeming to mind our presence - I've had the same experience. Although most of my photographs come from a hide at the Ken Dee Marshes and so in a sense are staged with a peanut holder, I've managed a few shots and have had many sightings in the wild wild! They really do not seem to be disturbed at all by at least a lone human wandering around, often coming down in their search for food mode to within a few feet. As they are a protected species and viewed as such by the public, as a species they may not associate us with harm or danger. One other point if you are pit and an]bout, although you may have noted this already: you can often hear them chittering in the trees even if you cannot see them. Well worth a couple of quiet minutes standing a wood to listen.

There is a place in Tentsmuir called Morton Lochs, there are hides there for the squirrels, also one where there is a good chance of seeing kingfishers up close. I have seen squirrels way up in the trees when I've been walking through middle of forest, not had them come too close though. They will sit right in front of the hide for long periods. It is nice as actually allows you to put camera down for five minutes and just watch them Only time I have heard them making noises is when they have brief scuffles.

OK - maybe we have the chatterbox species down here!! Watching squirrels can become a full time occupation.

Thank you Lana, I would love to take more animal pics as well but don't see them in the wild that often. These guys will appear if you leave nuts out!

They are wonderful little creatures, one of Scotland's most famous, they come really close to you at that place.
